The Piqua Baptist Church / First Baptist Church Records Collection
INTRODUCTION
The Piqua Baptist Church / First Baptist Church Records Collection was accessioned into the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collection on December 10, 2018, as a result of a donation by the Piqua Baptist Church. The collection is housed in twelve Gaylord 1215 acid free archival boxes containing a total of 575 files. The materials in the collection date from 1820 to 2011. The rights to the materials in this collection have been deeded over to the Piqua Public Library and the collections is available to our patrons for viewing and research. There are no known restrictions on the use of the documents in this collection.
HISTORY
The Piqua Baptist Church had its beginning in the stone house of Charles B. Hilliard on Staunton Street in Shawnee, formerly known as Huntersville. On August 30, 1811, thirteen men and thirteen women gathered and formed the Salem Baptist Church with Elder Thomas Childers and Elder Samuel Cottrell serving as pastors.
On July 8, 1820, a log church 26’ x 30’ was built on the east bank of Spring Creek, three-fourths mile north of the Piqua and Urbana Road. This church served as the center of membership. Elder Willis Hance served as pastor.
Ten years later, it was decided to return the church to Piqua and a frame building was erected on the southwest corner of East Ash and Harrison Streets. This marks the beginning of the First Baptist Church of Piqua, Ohio. The first area Baptist Sunday School was organized in this building. The first pastor was Elder Daniel Bryant who was followed by Elder J. L. Moore.
In 1840, the rural members separated from the Piqua church and formed a new group, meeting in a log schoolhouse on Spring Creek. This was the beginning of the Springcreek Baptist Church which continues to exist.
In 1848, the First Baptist Church built a brick structure on the south side of the 200 block of West High Street (currently the Masonic Temple). In this church, in 1851, the Dayton Baptist Association was organized. In 1871, another separation occurred. In order to serve residents living in the western area of Piqua, a group of members withdrew and formed the Calvary Baptist Church located at 610 West Ash Street. On April 26, 1911 members of the two churches med together at the Calvary Baptist Church and reunited the congregations into a single Piqua Baptist Church consisting of 297 charter members and called Rev. F. B. Neel as the first pastor.
Between 1912 and 1916 the Piqua Baptist Church built a brick building on the northwest corner of Broadway and W. Greene St. (500 Broadway). This building continued as the home of the church until 1976 when the congregation moved to a new location at 1402 West High Street. This new building was completed in two phases. The first phase consisted of an educational wing and a gymnasium (Fellowship Hall). The second phase, completed in 1980, added the sanctuary to the original building.
In 2011 the Piqua Baptist Church celebrated the 200th anniversary of the formation of a Baptist church in Piqua and the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Piqua Baptist Church.

CHARLES BLACK PIQUA BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
The Charles Black Piqua Baptist Church History Collection was accessioned into the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections by the Estate of Charles Black on May 19, 2016. Mr. Black was the recognized historian of the Piqua Baptist Church, Chairman of the Building Council which oversaw the construction of the Piqua Baptist Church building at 1402 West High Street and he was the chairman of the committee that put together the 2011 Bicentennial of Baptists in Piqua and the Centennial of Piqua Baptist Church. The documents in this collection contain Charles Black’s personal collection of photographs, booklets, working papers and other materials relating to his activities mentioned above. The collection is housed in a single Gaylord 1215 box containing 84 files. The ownership of these materials has been transferred to the Piqua Public Library and there is no known restrictions on their use. This collection was processed by Gary D. Meek in July 2016.

File 1 Charles Hilliard House – 415 Staunton Street, Piqua – site of the first meeting of Baptists in Piqua in 1811 – 8 x 10 black/white photograph – this is a copy of a photograph taken c. 1930.
2 Nine photographs of the Charles Hilliard House – 415 Staunton Street, Piqua, Ohio. These photographs were taken March 16, 2011 and were taken from varying angles.
3 Five photographs of Garbry Cemetery No. 2 located on Union-Shelby Road between Suber Road and U.S. Route 36 – this was the location of the Salem Baptist Church which was formed out of the meetings of Baptists at the Charles Hilliard House and was the first permanent structure of a Baptist Church in the Piqua area. It was a log church and was dedicated in 1820. A separation in this church in 1830 led to the formation of the Springcreek Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Piqua. The five photos were taken in the fall of 2010.
4 Six photographs of 297 & 299 East Ash Street – the first site of the First Baptist Church of Piqua after its separation from Salem Baptist Church. The separation occurred when the town Baptists became tired of driving out to the Spring Creek location on Sunday mornings. The house is located on the southwest corner of East Ash and Harrison Streets. These photos were taken March 23, 2011
5 Six photographs of the Piqua Masonic Temple at 217 West High Street – This building was built in 1847-48 and was the second location of the First Baptist Church of Piqua, Ohio. First Baptist remained in this building until it remerged with Calvary Baptist of Piqua in 1911 at which time the building was sold and the combined Piqua Baptist Church met in the Calvary building on West Ash Street until a new building could be completed on the northwest corner of Broadway and Greene Streets. The Masonic Lodges had begun to occupy the building by 1923. These photos were taken March 14, 2011.
6 Five photographs of 616 and 618 West Ash Street. These two houses were built after 1916. The two lots had previously been the site of the Calvary Baptist Church from 1871 through 1911 and of the Piqua Baptist Church between 1911 and 1916 when the church moved to 500 Broadway.

File 20 Copy of a long document written in pencil entitled “Origine and History of 1st Baptist Church, Piqua, Ohio.” This document was read at the Jubilee Meeting by Rev. F. A. Douglas, Pastor, October 5, 1870.

Gayman, printed by The Montgomery Printing Company, Troy, Ohio, 1951 – inside the booklet is a photograph of the Old First Baptist Church of Piqua, Ohio where the Dayton Baptist Association war organized. SERIES I: Minutes of Church Business Meetings 1812-1976
BOX 1
File 1 Church Clerk’s Minutes Book recording minutes of church business meetings
beginning February 21, 1812 with the adoption of the Church Covenant and ending on July 6, 1839.
The church was formed at a meeting in the home of Joseph Hilliard (415 Staunton St.) as a Regular Baptist Church. It initially adopted the name Salem Baptist Church. The congregation met in the homes of the members until July 8, 1820 when they began to hold services at Salem Meeting House on the banks of Spring Creek. The meeting house was not finished and evidently not heated because the congregation continued to meet in members’ homes during the months November to April. After March 1822 most meetings were held in the finished Salem Meeting House. March 31, 1832, church voted to move its place of residence to the town of Piqua. January 18, 1834 the congregation voted to change the name of the church to The First Regular Baptist Church at Piqua. January 22, 1838 a church at Spring Creek was constituted and accepted members.
2 Church Clerk’s Minutes Book recording minutes of church business meetings
beginning August 3, 1839 and ending September 11, 1853. Including the minutes of the business meetings, there is also a list of the members of First Baptist Church, how they became members, if they were excluded, restored and if they died. The dates for each of these events are listed and the page of the record where it is entered. March 6, 1847 the church voted on a contract to build a new house of worship for the sum of $4050.00 [this building is the current Masonic Temple on the south side of the 200 block of West High Street].
3 Church Clerk’s Minutes Book recording minutes of church business meetings
beginning August 21, 1853 and ending November 13, 1885. Included in the book are several lists of members. The entry on January 8, 1876 mentions Calvary Baptist Church in Piqua for the first time.
4 Church Clerk’s Minutes Book recording minutes of church business meetings
beginning January 2, 1886 and ending January 15, 1908. Included in these minutes are treasurer’s reports. The pages for the year 1890 have been cut from the book. In 1890 a suit was filed in Miami County Common Pleas Court by trustees of the church against the pastor, William Clatworthy, and several others over the sale of the church parsonage. [Copies of all documents relating to this suit are in Small Collections (SC) -5704.] The end of the book recounts the early attempts to reunite First Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church.
5 Church Clerk’s Minutes Book recording minutes of church business meetings
beginning February 28, 1908 and ending April 16, 1911. This book details the negotiations for union between First Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church and ends with the creation of Piqua Baptist Church.

beginning April 26, 1911 and ending November 2, 1921. The book begins with the April 26, 1911 combined meeting of the congregations of both First Baptist and Calvary Baptist. File 34 Record of the officers and members of the Piqua Baptist Church beginning April 26,
1911. There is an alphabetical list and a chronological list. The chronological list begins with the Charter Members of the church created from the merger of the First Baptist Church and the Calvary Baptist Church on April 26, 1911. The record contains other members added through the year 1918.
35 Membership List, Piqua Baptist Church beginning 1926 with members added or
released through 1931. The record is in four columns: Name; Address; Received [how]; Losses [reason].
36 Active Membership Roll, Piqua Baptist Church, 1931. This book contains a list of
the names and addresses of active church members in 1931 and later. In a column after the names and addresses is a column, which states how the individual became a member, i.e. charter member, by baptism, by letter from another church or on an individual’s statement of experience. The last column, used in the years after 1931, gives a reason for leaving the church, i.e. death, transfer by letter or dropped. On July 11, 1933, thirty-three members were dropped in a purge of the roll.

some reason could not attend church. Eleven members were dropped in the 1933 purge of the roll.

for each Sunday on two facing pages. The left hand page contains the following for each class: attendance, offering, missions offering, new members, visitors, and the number of class members who brought their Bibles. There are averages of these figures and totals and a comment on unusual weather conditions. On the right hand page are notes concerning any events of the day.
2 Sunday School Treasurer’s Record Book: May 13, 1951 through December 22,
1956. This book records collections and disbursements as recorded at Citizens National Bank and in the following fund accounts: General Fund or Current Fund, Missions Fund, Birthday Fund and Special Fund.
3 Four Judson Improved Sunday School Classbooks. These small paperback books

members and others who met for an evening meal and program one time per month in the Fellowship Hall at Piqua Baptist Church. The book covers the years 1982 through 1989.

File 1 Hand written history of Baptists in Piqua from the earliest church in 1811 to the
construction of First Baptist Church, 200 block West High St., in 1848.
2 A typed “Statement of First Church Members of Baptist Union, by John
Daganhardt.” This document recounts the failed attempt to unify the First Baptist Church and the Calvary Baptist Church in 1907.
3 Copy of a hand written history of the union of First Baptist Church and Calvary
Baptist Church and the building of the Piqua Baptist Church at 500 Broadway. The history is from 1911 to 1915 and contains the names of the officers of the church in 1915, the members of the standing committees, the Cradle Roll of the Piqua Baptist Sabbath School [containing 45 names], and an alphabetical list of the 347 members of the Piqua Baptist Church in 1915.
4 A hand written summary of the costs of building the Piqua Baptist Church at 500
Broadway – 1912-1916 – for a total cost of $47,126.58 including $2400.00 for the pipe organ.

SERIES XXIV: 1848 Scroll of Pledges to Build the First Baptist Church

File 1 An approximately 50 inch scroll of paper mounted on cloth with a wood dowel
attached at the top. The scroll contains a list of 118 names of people/families who pledged to donate money, labor, materials or equipment for the building of the First Baptist Church on the south side of the 200 block of West High Street (215 W. High). The pledges are listed in dollar amounts and where cash money was not donated the specific items to be donated are listed after the name in a right hand column. Middle columns were used to check off when the donation was received. The building was completed in 1848. The building served as a church until approximately the end of 1911. After the union of First Baptist and Calvary Baptist took place the congregation met in the Calvary Baptist Church on West Ash Street until a new church on the northwest corner of Broadway and West Greene was completed in 1916. The building is currently the Masonic Temple.
