THE LEONARD U. HILL COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
The papers of Leonard U. Hill were accessioned into the Flesh Public Library Archives and Special Collections in April of 1985. They were donated by Miss Louise Hill, the daughter of Leonard Hill. Hill was an author and local historian for the Miami County area.
The collection fills sixteen Hollinger boxes, 120 file folders, and four map folders. The papers cover the years from 1861 to 1975 in original manuscripts, and from 1000 B.C. to the Twentieth Century in secondary materials. Other portions of Hill’s collections can be found in Wright State University Archives and the library of the Ohio Historical Society. There are no restrictions on their use and library copyright has been deeded to the public.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The Leonard U. Hill Collection is divided into seventeen series: Photographs, Historical Organizations, The Ohio Story, Technology and Natural History, Warfare, Anthony Wayne, Personalities, Ethnic History, Original Documents, Correspondence, Religion, Political Subdivisions, Genealogy, Col. John Johnston/Piqua Historical Area, AccountBooks/Research Materials, Maps and Pamphlets/Booklets.
Series I: Photographs, contains over 320 photographs taken or collected by Hill. The photographs date from approximately 1880 until 1970. Materials in this series are found in Box 1 and Box 2.
Series II: Historical Organizations, is a collection of material relating to various organizations and committees of which Hill was a member. Hill was a founding member of the Miami County Historical Society, the Miami County Archaeological Society, and the Piqua Historical Museum. Materials in this series are found in Box 3.
Series III: The Ohio Story, is a series of story transcripts and schedules used from 1949 to 1955 on WTAM Radio, Cleveland, Ohio. The Ohio Story is a series of fictional historical dialogues by notable Ohio figures. Materials in this series are found in Box 4.
Series IV: Technology and Natural History, contains research material and notes, clippings, pamphlets, and booklets on areas including natural history, architecture, technology, and transportation. Materials in this series are found in Box 5.
Series V: Military, covers United States military history including the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. The material consists of notes, clippings, pamphlets, and a manuscript Civil War period diary. Materials in this series are found in Box 6.
Series VI: Anthony Wayne, contains transcripts of diaries and journals of men that served under General Wayne. The collection also contains pamphlets, booklets, and maps on Anthony Wayne sites, forts, and the Treaty of Greenville. Materials in this series are found in Box 7.
Series VII: Personalities, is a series of biographical materials on Daniel Boone, George Rogers Clark, and William Henry Harrison. The material consists of secondary source works collected by Hill. Materials in this series are found in Box 8, Files 1-3.
Series VIII: Ethnic History, contains research material and secondary sources on prehistoric peoples, Miami, Shawnee, and Wyandot Indians. The collection concentrates on prehistoric and Indian life in the Ohio area. Black history is also part of the series. Materials in this series are found in Box 8, File 4 – Box 9, File 1.
Series IX: Original Documents, is a collection of nineteenth century correspondence. The letters range from 1819 until 1851. The series also contains pamphlets on the WCTU, GUOOF, and the YMCA. Materials in this series are found in Box 9, Files 2-6.
Series X: Correspondence, contains letters addressed to Hill from various individuals and organizations. The correspondence deals with historical and genealogical topics. Materials in this series are found in Box 9, Files 7 & 8.
Series XI: Religion, is a series of research notes, bulletins, and reports on churches in the Upper Miami Valley. The largest collection covers the First Presbyterian Church of Piqua. Hill, who was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church, wrote A Sesquicentennial History of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church of Piqua, Ohio, 1812-1962, in 1962. Materials in this series are found in Box 9, File 9 – Box 10, File 9.
Series XII: Area Designations, contains material on geographic areas with a concentration on Ohio. Eight counties in Ohio are covered with a majority of the collection centering on Miami County. The series includes research notes, clippings, maps, OHI forms, and various pieces of printed material. Materials in this series are found in Box 10, File 10 – Box 12, File 3.
Series XIII: Genealogy, is a collection of research notes on specific families, cemeteries, and census data. Hill was a dedicated genealogist and this part of the collection reflects this interest. A significant portion of the series consists of inquiries to Hill about various family histories. Materials in this series are found in Box 12, Files 14-20.
Series XIV: Col. John Johnston/Piqua Historical Area, is a series consisting of correspondence, clippings, transcripts, guides, genealogy, and research notes on the Johnston family. Hill was the author of John Johnston and the Indians, in 1957. He was also one of the early promoters of the concept of turning the John Johnston Farm into a state historical site. Materials in this series are found in Box 13.
Series XV: Account Books/Research Materials, contains printing samples of Samuel Caldwell, an unidentified account book, and a Pennsylvania Railroad Memorandum book. The series is also composed of extensive research notes on a wide range of subjects compiled by Hill. Materials in this series are found in Box 14.
Series XVI: Maps – consists of a single folder of ten maps and gazetteers on Ohio and the area found in Box 15. In the Hill Collection folders in the Map Cases in the Local History Room are found over seventy maps covering twenty Ohio counties, Ohio glacier periods, and parts of Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Missouri. The various types of maps include topographical, historical, geological, and political boundary and road maps.
Series XVII: Booklets, Pamphlets, contains thirty-three pieces of soft bound printed material. The booklets and pamphlets range in subject matter from Ohio tourist guides to historical works on Piqua or Troy. The series dates from 1885 until 1976. Materials in this series are found in Box 16.
