ALEXANDER-MITCHELL POST #158 G.A.R. COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
The Alexander-Mitchell Post #158 G.A.R. Collection was accessioned into the Flesh Public Library Archives on March 6, 1986. The collection fills one Hollinger box and eleven file folders. The collection covers the years 1897-1930. There are no restrictions on the use of this collection and the literary copyright has been deeded to the public.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The Alexander-Mitchell Post #158 G.A.R. Collection is divided into two series: Organization & Members and Burial Records.
SERIES I: ORGANIZATION & MEMBERS – covers the roll of Officers, Committees, By-Laws and listings of Members. Some Minutes of later meetings are also included.
SERIES II: BURIAL RECORDS – covers members death dates and in most instances, the name of the cemetery and lot for burial.
HISTORY
The Grand Army of the Republic, as a national organization, was established in Illinois in 1866. A Piqua Post #1 was organized October 27, 1866. November 9, 1881 another attempt was made to form a Post and the Alexander Post #158 was formed. The Post was named for Adjutant John E. Alexander of the 110th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and Adam C. Alexander of the United States Ship Vanderbilt. John Alexander died of wounds at the Second Battle of Bull Run and Adam Alexander died of a disease in 1864.
In 1882, a Post #736 was formed named for General Ormsby M. Mitchell, Commander of the 3rd Division of the Army of the Ohio and the Army of the Cumberland during the War of the Rebellion.
On December 27, 1897 the Alexander and Mitchell Posts were consolidated taking the name Alexander-Mitchell Post #158. The Organization was active until 1929-1930.
