HISTORY
To the best of our knowledge (john) Michael/Mark Ziegenfelder was born in 1833 in Maryland. He is believed to be the son of S. Ziegenfelder, who established a grocery in Piqua in 1837. In 1853, one Charles F. Ziegenfelder (wife Amelia) is listed as a confectioner and grocer and in 1859-60 his address is listed as 181 Main Street. 1960-1861 M. Ziegenfelder joins C. F. Ziegenfelder and they are listed as proprietors of a grocery and provision store. After 1864 M. Ziegenfelder is listed as the sole proprietor of the store at 181 Main Street, until his unexpected death February 21, 1886 at the age of 53.
M. Ziegenfelder was married to Mary K., born in Ohio in 1846 and died February 26, 1923 – age 76. They had three children: Addie born 1853 and graduated from Piqua High School in 1882. At the time of her mother’s death in 1923, she was known as Mrs. Addie Hamilton of Cincinnati, Ohio. Alice, born 1855 – in 1923 was listed as Mrs. Charles Jergens of Cincinnati, Ohio. Walter, born in 1868 died December 2, 1907, age 39.
The family resided above the grocery – 181 Main Street – after the buildings were renumbered, their address was 202½ North Main Street. The 1870 Census lists $6000.00 real estate value and $4000.00 personal property.
Mr. Ziegenfelder’s business dealt with regular groceries as well as ice and liquor and according to his ledgers, he had a tremendous trade in oysters. The following is an advertisement found in a copy of an 1874 Piqua newspaper.
