GREAT MIAMI RIVER CORRIDOR COMMITTEE COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
The Great Miami River Corridor Committee Collection was accessioned into the Flesh Public Library’s Archives in 1987. Jim Oda was the donor. The collection was processed between April and June 2003. The collection consists of 21 boxes and one folder of maps in drawer 20 of the map case. The date range is 1974 through 1987. There are no known restrictions on the use of this collection.
In the fall of 2005, Miami County delivered the remainder of the River Corridor Committee materials. These consisted of the files of Terry Wright, former director of the project, and a number of boxes of brochures. These records were combined with the existing collection and reorganized into eleven boxes and 405 files. An additional 23 maps are in the Local History Room Map Case.

HISTORY
The Great Miami River Corridor Committee was created in response to a developmental land plan completed by the Environmental Science Institute of Miami University in 1975. Formed in 1976, The Great Miami River Corridor Committee promoted the public’s awareness of the Great Miami River as a natural resource. Through community outreach and educational programs, the non-profit organization increased the public’s awareness of the historical significance and value of the river. The committee was also a strong advocate of conservation and preservations. Utilizing such organizations as the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) and the Boy Scouts, the Great Miami River Corridor commi8ttee was able to hold river clean ups and restorative projects for the canal and locks. The committee also involved itself with historical organizations and the Ohio Historical Society in an attempt to preserve various lands and sites along the Great Miami River.
Members of the Great Miami River Corridor Committee consisted of representatives from Miami and Shelby Counties. These representatives were appointed from the cities of Lockington, Piqua, Port Jefferson, Sidney, Tipp City, and Troy. The Miami Conservancy District, Miami County Park District, Miami and Shelby County Regional Planning Commissions, and Piqua, Sidney, Tipp City, and Troy Chambers of Commerce provided sponsorship and financial assistance.
In 1987, the county commissioners disbanded the Great Miami River corridor Committee in response to severe economic cutbacks. River Corridor files were either placed in storage or moved to the Flesh Public Library in Piqua, Ohio. By 2006 all known files were in the possession of the library.
