SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The Gallaher Drug Store No. 25 / Fitzpatrick Collection is divided into three series.
SERIES I – includes photographs, advertising, promotions, and drug company catalogs and price lists.
SERIES II – includes the business records and store communications of Gallaher Drug Store No. 25 with William Earl Fitzpatrick as store manager.
SERIES III – includes the personal financial records and papers of William Earl Fitzpatrick and his wife, Florence.
HISTORY
Gallaher Drug Store No. 25 opened in 1932 at 326 North Main Street with Elmer O. Jolley as store Manager. The 1936 Polk, Piqua City Directory lists William Earl Fitzpatrick as store manager and Albert H. Erhardt as assistant store manager. (Mr. Erhardt, in 1934, was listed as a pharmacist at Red Cross Pharmacy at 130 West Ash Street.) This arrangement continued through 1948.
According to the 1950 Polk Directory, Mr. Erhardt had become store manager and Mr. Fitzpatrick was listed as a pharmacist. Between 1950 and 1953 Gallaher Drugs moved from 326 North Main Street to 414-16 North Main Street. Mr. Erhardt was listed as the manager at the time of the move and Mr. Fitzpatrick was a pharmacist.
Mr. Erhardt died rather suddenly at age 54 on 29 November 1956 and Mr. Fitzpatrick once again became the manager of store No. 25. In 1963, Mr. Fitzpatrick assisted in the opening of a second Gallaher Drug store in Piqua located at 1540 Covington Avenue. Mr. Milton Jones became the manager of the Covington Avenue store while Mr. Fitzpatrick remained as manager of store No. 25 at 414-16 North Main Street.
In July 1965, Gallaher Drug Company was purchased by Revco D.S. Inc. of Cleveland. By 1966, the name “Gallaher” had been dropped on both Piqua stores and they were now called “Revco Discount Drug Center.” Mr. Fitzpatrick remained as store manager at 414-16 North Main Street after the conversion to Revco. In 1976, after 40 years as a pharmacist/store manager with Gallaher/Revco, Mr. Fitzpatrick retired.
The collection we have appears to consist of those items Mr. Fitzpatrick cleared out of his desk and file cabinets at the time of his retirement. Mr. Fitzpatrick died in May 1984.
