INTRODUCTION
The Dick Dunkle Photograph Collection was accessioned into the Flesh Public Library in the late 1990s. Mr. Bill Cruse who had full title to the collection donated it to the Library. The processing of the collection was completed in November 2004.
The collection consists of two (2) Hollinger boxes containing 34 files arranged in three (3) series. The date range is 1936-1941. There are no known restrictions on the use of this collection.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The Dunkle Photograph Collection is divided into three (3) series.
SERIES I – includes photographs of people – mostly negatives with some positive prints. These photographs are arranged in alphabetical order by last name of the person photographed.
SERIES II – includes photographs of buildings in Piqua in the years between 1937 and 1941.
SERIES III – includes photographs, which were originally in a photo album. The photos are arranged in the order in which they were originally placed in the album.
HISTORY
Richard J. “Dick” Dunkle was born in Piqua in 1919 the son of Joseph H. and Rose R. Dunkle. The family resided at 224 W. High Street in the late 1930s and Mr. Joseph Dunkle was an owner of Dunkle Brothers Cigar and Transfer on 323 N. Wayne Street. Dick attended Piqua City Schools and graduated from Piqua High School with the Class of 1937.
Immediately after graduation, Dick went to work as a reporter for the Piqua Daily Call. By the end of 1941 Mr. Dunkle was in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Dunkle, evidently, did not return to Piqua after the war. He died on 9 January 2000 in Garden City, New York.
The photographs in this collection were taken between 1936 and 1941.
