DR. WARREN COLEMAN PRIVATE HOSPITAL COLLECTION
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The Dr. Warren Coleman Private Hospital Collection is a description of his patients’ contagious diseases, organized in alphabetical order by their last names. The collection includes nine files in one Hollinger Box.
HISTORY
Dr. Warren Coleman operated a private hospital, on Main Street, in Troy, during the 1920’s. His grandfather, Dr. Asa Coleman, founded it in 1911. Dr. Warren Coleman saw patients and condurced surgery in his hospital prior to the erection of Stouder Hospital in 1928.
Dr. Coleman summarized advances in medicine and surgery during his lifetime: “There was a time when the surgeon washed his hands and instruments after operations instead of before. Then came the antiseptic stage, precursor of the present aseptic or completely clean stage, which has made modern surgery possible. The kitchen table was the common sphere of home surgery. Instruments were sterilized by boiling; sponges, gowns and towels, by baking. Gloves were not yet worn, but there were few infections. The period I have lived through in medical matters has been epochal.”
