HISTORY
The founder of the DeWeese law firm, Alvah Watson DeWeese, practiced law in Miami County for more than fifty years. He was born in Piqua on March 3, 1873, the son of Henry G. and Lucy Esty DeWeese. The DeWeese family is one of the oldest in Miami County, and the grandmother of A.W. DeWeese was the first white female child born within its borders. His father, Henry G. DeWeese, was a substantial farmer in Springcreek Township.
A.W. DeWeese graduated first from the Spring Creek Graded School, and then Troy High School, after which he spent one year in the law department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, graduating in 1895 from the Cincinnati Law School.
Mr. DeWeese then practiced law for two years in partnership with Captain Williams at Troy, and later conducted offices at both Troy and Piqua, in partnership with A.R. Byrkett, and after this association was dissolved, Mr. DeWeese continued to practice law from his Piqua office.
On December 25, 1900, he married Miss Grace Doren, of Pekin, Illinois. They had four sons: Alvah W., of Los Angeles; James H., of Piqua; Robert, of Sacramento; and Richard, of Los Angeles.
Mr. DeWeese was the mayor of Piqua for three years. His administration attracted national attention to this town because of his policy of enforcing “blue laws.” He contended that laws and ordinances are enacted to be enforced, resulting in Piqua businesses being absolutely closed on Sundays.
Mr. DeWeese also served as state senator from the twelfth district, including Darke, Shelby, and Miami counties, and was sponsor of some of the important legislation enacted during that time. Mr. DeWeese for twenty-five years was prominent in Republican politics. He died in 1956.
One of his sons, James DeWeese, served Miami County as a prosecutor for sixteen years, a municipal judge for three years, and a Common Pleas judge for seven years. He retired in 1998 after serving sixty-five years in law.
