John and Ursula Harris Collection
Introduction
The John and Ursula Harris Collection was accessioned into the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections on November 17, 2017 as a donation by Mrs. Ursula Harris. The donation consists of a large number of artifacts and some print documents. Within the artifacts is the tool chest and tools of Isaac Whitlock, the carpentry subcontractor for the Plaza Hotel construction project. The artifacts are housed in five boxes in the Library’s artifacts storage area. The artifacts will be made a part of the Library exhibits. The print documents are housed in a single Hollinger box containing eighteen file folders and are available to our patrons and others for research. The ownership of the collection has been transferred to the Piqua Public Library and there are no known restrictions on its use.
Scope and Content
The John and Ursula Harris Collection is divided into the following three series:

SERIES I: Artifacts
File
1 A list of the artifacts donated by Ursula Harris in November-December 2017 and their cataloging numbers and location. This donation includes the tool chest and tools belonging to Isaac Whitlock. In 1887 Isaac J. Whitlock was the owner of a planning mill, sash, door and blind factory at 507 Boone Street. In 1890-1891, he was the carpentry sub-contractor and became the lead carpenter on the Plaza Hotel project. The Whitlock Tools section of the donation comprises sixty-eight artifacts and the total in the Harris donation is 126 artifacts.
SERIES II: Photographs
File
2 Views of the roof of the Val Decker Packing Company, the surrounding area and the Great Miami River. The photos were taken in 1983. There are fourteen 4 ½” x 3 ½” color matt finish photographs.
3 Photographs of the demolition of the Allen-A Company buildings in Piqua. Thesebuildings were formerly the Atlas and Superior Underwear Companies and were located between North Wayne and North Downing Streets at Riverside Drive. The photos are dated April 1994. There are ten 6” x 4” color glossy finish photographs.
4 Photographs of the Kidder Farm, later called Montross – circa 1980. The Kidder Farm is located just north of Troy on the east side of the Piqua-Troy Road just north of the Troy-Urbana Road. Some years after these photos were taken a fire occurred, which so damaged the house that the owners turned the house over to the Troy Fire Department to use for training. The house no longer exists. There are seventeen 3 ½” x 5” color glossy finished photographs.

8 The Ohio State News, July 5, 1947 – The Ohio State News was a weekly newspaper published in Columbus. It published news and social events of Ohio’s African-American community. In July of each year, the newspaper presented the “Miss Bronze Ohio” Bathing Beauty Revue. In 1947, the 13th Annual Bathing Beauty Revue was held and Miss Joan Evans of Piqua was one of the 75 contestants. Also in this file is the front page from The Ohio State News, Saturday, July 19, 1947. This page had numerous pictures of the contestants including Miss Joan Evans (bottom left).
9 “Souvenir Program”, The Ohio State News 13th Annual Bathing Beauty Revue, Sunday, July 20, 1947, held at Haft’s Acre Arena in Columbus, Ohio. A picture of Miss Joan Evans of Piqua is on the front of the program in the center. This file contains three copies of the program.

14 A 1 ½” x 6” off-white ribbon with the following printed on it in blue: “PIQUA, OCT. 2ND, 1886.” The purpose or event for which the ribbon was made has not been determined.
15 The Piqua Coca-Cola Bottling Plant – nine cancelled checks written for current expenses and mainly to local individuals and merchants. The checks are dated between January 15, 1947 and February 11, 1947. The checks are 8 ¼” x 3 3/8”; they are yellow with black, red and green lettering and trim and a hand holding a Coca-Cola bottle on the left side. The checks are signed by Frances R. Lange.
16 The Miami and Erie Canal: Symbol of an Era – a sixteen-page booklet published by Carillon Park, Dayton, Ohio.
17 Two post card size photographs – 5 ¾” x 3 ½” black and white. One photo is of Main Street in Lockington, Ohio. The other photo is of the old canal boat, the DeCamp Statler, in the Miami and Erie Canal docked at Newport, Ohio.
18 A greeting card, 3 5/8” x 9” – on the front is a drawing of a girl in a pink hat and pink dress. Above the girl is written: “Hello From Piqua, Ohio, Having the Time of my Life and Why Not?” On the inside is written: “Medicare sure won’t send me here later!” The card was drawn and produced by Amberley Traveler, Amberley Greeting Card Co., Cincinnati 45237, in 1968.

The trays are 32” long x 7” wide x 4” deep. One tray is divided into two sections. The other try is collapsed but was originally divided into four sections. This Tool Chest belonged to Isaac Whitlock, the lead carpenter during the 1890-91 construction of the Plaza Hotel on the Public Square in Piqua, Ohio. |
