THE MARTHA AND DOROTHY SHANESY PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
The Martha and Dorothy Shanesy Photograph Collection was accessioned into the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections in 2012 as a donation from Miss Jacqueline Lange a first cousin of Martha and Dorothy Shanesy. The collection is housed in three Hollinger boxes containing 103 files. The collection contains numerous photographs of the Shanesy and Lange families generally from the years 1900-1990. The rights to these photographs and documents have been transferred to the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections and there is no known restriction on the use of these materials.
NOTE: This collection contains numerous photographs which were either not identified or were only partially identified. Anyone with knowledge of either the Shanesy or Lange families is welcomed to view the collection with the intent of further identifying these photographs.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Martha and Dorothy Shanesy Photograph Collection is housed in three Hollinger boxes containing a total of 103 files. The collection is divided into the following four series:

HISTORY
Martha and Dorothy Shanesy were the daughters of William Shanesy and Anna Elizabeth Lange Shanesy. Martha was born in Piqua on August 1, 1914. Dorothy was born in Piqua on March 28, 1916. The two sisters were educated in St. Mary’s School, Piqua, Ohio and graduated from Piqua Catholic High School, Martha in 1932 and Dorothy in 1933. After graduation Martha attended the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1935 as a Registered Nurse. After graduation Dorothy attended the Ideal Business School in Piqua. Martha worked as a nurse in the office and clinic of Dr. William Weis until 1976 at which time she began work at Dettmer Hospital. She retired from Dettmer Hospital in 1984. Dorothy worked as a stenographer for the J.C. Gardner Auto Agency from 1936-1941. In 1941 Dorothy went to work as a bookkeeper for the J. Been Wilkinson Insurance Agency and in 1948 became a clerk with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Piqua. In 1977 she became a clerk with Piqua National Bank and retired in 1981.
When Martha and Dorothy were not yet in high school William Shanesy died. He was 43 years old. His wife, Anna, took the girls and moved in with her unmarried sisters and brother Raymond at 922 W. North Street. This would be the girls home until approximately 1987. Thus the girls were raised as a part of the large Frank and Elizabeth Lange family which consisted of five daughters and four sons. Anna Lange Shanesy was the third child and second daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Lange. Frank was one of the founders of the Lange Brewing Company of Piqua. Frank’s children in order of birth were: Gertrude A. Lange (never married); Alexander Lange, Anna Elizabeth Lange (married William Shanesy); Rose M. Lange (never married); Frances A. Lange (never married); Frank N. Lange; Frederick J. Lange (Frank N. and Fred were the founders of the Piqua Coca Cola Bottling Co.); Alice A. Lange (married Manier); Raymond T. “Step” Lange (the photographer).
