FLEMING’S AMERICAN EXAMINER / OHIO EXAMINER COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
Fleming’s American Examiner / Ohio Examiner Collection was accessioned into the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections in May 2017 as a part of a donation from Mr. Steve Nicodumus. The newspaper was a weekly independent newspaper edited and published by G. W. Fleming. The first issues were published in Columbus, Ohio through 1933. By March 1934 the paper had moved its publication site to Belle Center, Ohio and Earl A. Harris was listed as the editor. On March 9, 1935 the name Fleming’s Ohio Examiner was changed to Flemings American Examiner and William Snyder was listed as the editor. The paper had a page devoted to the following: national news, state news, Springfield/ Xenia, Dayton, Wapakoneta/Lima, Piqua/Troy/Sidney, Columbus/Circleville and other localities. The paper published stories of news, rumor, speculation, conspiracy theories and conjecture which at times bordered on libelous. Mr. Fleming was arrested on several occasions by the Piqua police and forced to appear before Judge J. Harrison Smith. Both of these men along with the members of the city commission were subjects of scathing attacks by Fleming in his newspaper. The purpose of the paper as stated in the November 17, 1934 issue was as follows:
“To keep the people informed of how they have been and are being robbed through public utilities and their corrupt tie-up with self-serving county, state and national officials.
To disclose the corrupt influences used on and by the public press, which threatens the free thinking of our people.
To inform the electorate honestly and fairly, without a political or any other string attached, of the manner in which their public officials perform or fail to perform their duties.
To inform the people of the moves made behind the public view of such dangerous and un-American combinations of special interest as the book trust in our schools; the control of the air by another interest, through radio, telegraph and telephone; the strangulation of individual efforts through the growth and monopoly of chain stores and chain gasoline stations, and the reduction of loan shark interest rates.”
The collection is housed in one Gaylord 1215 box containing 64 files and contains newspapers dated from March 11, 1933 to February 22, 1941. As the last paper in the collection is 76 years old, copyright protection is no longer applicable. Thus there are no known restrictions on the use of the materials in this collection.
