THE PIQUA GIRL SCOUTS COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
The Piqua Girl Scouts Collection was accessioned into the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections on July 27, 2016. The Collection was donated by Ms. Leesa Baker. The collection is housed in two acid-free metal edged boxes containing 57 files. The collection generally covers the years 1946 through 1983. Negatives to the photographs in Sub-Series IIA can be found in MS-16, The Raymond “Step” Lange Photograph Collection.
The rights to the collection have been deeded over to the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections. The collection is available to our patrons and researchers and there are no known restrictions on the use of the materials in the collection. The collection was processed in September 2016 by Gary D. Meek.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Piqua Girl Scouts Collection is divided into the following four series:

SERIES I: Scrapbooks

1 Scrapbook #1 – 1946-1959 – This scrapbook contains newspaper clippings of Girl Scout activities of the Piqua Girl Scout Association beginning in late 1946 and continuing to late 1959. In 1959 The Piqua Girl Scout Association, along with other associations in Miami and Darke Counties formed the Green Valley Girl Scout Council. The council began its operations on January 1, 1960. The scrapbook consisted of a large stack of unbound pages in serious deterioration. Scrapbook #1 in this file is a copy of the unbound pages somewhat rearranged in chronological order.
2 Scrapbook #2 – 1960-1964 – This scrapbook is bound with string and is in good condition. The newspaper articles cover Girl Scout activities primarily in Piqua but also includes articles about the newly formed Green Valley Girl Scout Council.
3 Scrapbook #3 – 1978-1981 – The scrapbook is hard backed with a screw binder and contains newspaper articles covering Girl Scout activities in the four years from 1978 through the end of 1981. In 1968 The Green Valley Girl Scout Council merged with the Buckeye Trails Girl Scout Council, therefore the articles in the scrapbook also include information on Buckeye Trails.
4 Newspaper articles from the early 1950’s that were found loose in a folder or a scrapbook. Included are articles from the 1950 Piqua Daily Call about the building and dedication of the Happy Haven Girl Scout Camp on Demming Road.
5 Newspaper articles found loose in the back of Scrapbook #3 – the articles date from 1980 to 1983.
6 Magazine section of the Miami Valley Sunday News, March 7, 1982 celebrating the 70th Anniversary of Girl Scouts.

1 Group photo of day campers in June 1948 – the photo is taken in front of the lodge at Happy Haven Girl Scout Camp. The lodge at this time was unfinished. There are three copies of this photo, two are miss dated 1946 and one is dated 1948. All three are dated July 14 or 15. The 1946 date is not possible since the land was not secured until early 1947.

Those identified among the Girl Scouts are: Barbara McCartney Young, Nancy Smith, Mary Anna Toland, ___Brading and ___Chronerberry. The photo is dated May 2, 1949.

9 Three photos of older Girl Scouts and leaders working on a landscaping project at Happy Haven Girl Scout Camp. The following are identified on one of the pictures: Mildred Summers, Girl Scout Leader; Girl Scouts Mary Ann Krampe and Susan French.
10 Girl Scouts of Troop 4 with their leaders – the photo is possibly taken in the basement of Greene Street Methodist Church. The following are identified on the back of the photo: Mrs. Allene Erhardt (leader), Mary Lou Hudson (leader), and Girl Scouts Melinda Hilbert, Mary Gallagher, Phyllis Erhardt, Marlyn Walker, Susan Ross. The photo is dated March 12, 1952.

11 Photograph of two men and seven ladies standing in the middle of a field, the man in the middle of the group is holding and stepping on a shovel – this is possibly a photograph of the ground breaking for Happy Haven Girl Scout Camp off of Demming Road, Piqua – c. 1947.
12 Five photographs of camping activities around the flag pole at Happy Haven Girl Scout Camp off of Demming Road, Piqua. The photos are not dated but from clothing style and other evidence in the photo the photos may be roughly dated to c. 1950’s.
13 Girl Scouts – probably Troop 4 – dressed representing various nations at Christmas – the photo was probably taken in the basement at Greene Street Church – c. 1950’s
14 Three Girl Scouts sitting on a settee – on the left is Cindy Wagner (Martin) and on the right is Bonnie Zimmerman (Murray), the girl in the middle is not identified. The photo is c. 1955. The photo was taken by The Piqua Studio & Engraving Co., 214 Cedarbrook Drive, Piqua, the home of Jacob “Jake” Fentz, a shop teacher at Piqua Central High School.
15 Three photographs of the March 21, 1952 Piqua Girl Scout Association pageant “A Growing Force for Freedom.” The pageant was presented in three acts at the Piqua Central High School Auditorium.

16 A series of seven – 5” x 7” photographs of Girl Scouts learning and working as aides at Piqua Memorial Hospital. To be an aide the girl had to be at least fifteen years old. The aides were the forerunners of the “Candy Stripers” program and they wore green checked jumpers. There is one photo of the entire group of 22 girls. The girls were trained and supervised by Mrs. J. L. Bales, R.N., who was in charge of the Aides Program at the hospital. The following are identified in one or more of the photographs: Mrs. J. L. Bales, Susan Pool, Phyllis Bader, Delia Rundle, Glenna Lutes, Beverly West, Carolyn Kienle, Mrs. Richard McKee, Alice Barton, Jean Davis, Michaleen Crosby, Kay Holler, Rita Fessler, Judy Munk, Barbara Hoban and Pat Hair. The photographs are c. 1953.
17 A 5” x 7” photograph of Girl Scout Leaders receiving instruction in First Aid from the American Red Cross. The following individuals are identified on the back of the photograph: Frances Lutes, Pat Williams, Dorothy Shaffer, Rosie Ouenden, Joan DeBrosse, Ward Ditmer and Smokey Collins. The photo is c. 1953.
18 A 3 ½” x 4 ½” photo of Brownie Jean Raines enticing her father Bob Raines to buy Girl Scout cookies. It is Jean’s first cookie sale – c. 1958.
19 Three 4” x 5” photos of the Kickapoo Patrol, Piqua, Ohio in the 1959 Roundup – most of these girls were 1960 Piqua High School graduates. The following girls are in the picture: Jean Slaughter, Bobby (Roberta) Woods, Judy Dankworth, Barbara McCartney, Rona Brotkin, Marsha Hagan, Janice Lane, Kathie Hill.
20 A 3 ½” x 5” snapshot photo of Troop 36 in front of St. Paul’s Church – c. 1950
21 A 4” x 6” photo of four girls practicing archery at Happy Haven Girl Scout Camp – c. 1960.
22 A 2 ½” x 3 ½” photo of a scouting family – the photo shows a father, mother, son and 3 daughters. The father’s name is George and he is an Explorer Scout Advisor; the mother’s name is Vesta and she is in the uniform of a Girl Scout Leader; the son is Bob and he is an Explorer Eagle Scout; the oldest daughter is Karen and she is a First Class Girl Scout (Cadet); Jackie, age ten, is a Girl Scout and Judy, age seven, is a Brownie. The last name of the family is not given.
23 Two photographs of a Junior Over Night at the Piqua YMCA sponsored by the Piqua / Covington Neighborhood Girl Scouts on October 26, 1979: [1] 7 ½” x 6 ½” photo of a group of girls being scared by members of the Piqua Jaycees dressed up like “spooks”; [2] 7” x 6 ¾” photo of Jaycee Kermit Fair dressed up like a snake. In the background are Girl Scouts Cindy Assenheimer and Ruth Fries and Neighborhood Girl Scout Chairman Marilyn Halteman.
24 A 7 ½” x 6 ¼” photo of Marine recruiters Michael Shedd and Allen Randall with Girl Scout Laura Redinbo looking at a pile of wrapped Christmas presents. On December 10, 1979 Girl Scouts wrapped 400 used toys collected by the Marine Corps Recruiters. For doing this, both the Scouts and the Marines received a “Warm Fuzzy” from the Piqua Daily Call.
25 Girl Scouts looking on as Mayor Sam Jackson, Jr. signs a proclamation for Girl Scout Week, March 9-15, 1980. The girls looking on are Becky Halteman, Cadette; Rose Mary Bayman. Adult advisor; Jenny Holthouse, Brownie; Theresa Hull, Junior. The photo is 7” x 4 ½”.

34 Girl Scouts, Inc., National Headquarters – membership card for Jane Albright – the card is good for the year ending June 2, 1928. On the back – she is in Cloverleaf Troop, City of Piqua, Ohio and her Girl Scout Captain is Eleanor Jamison. She qualified as a Tenderfoot in 1927.
35 Program for The Piqua Girl Scout Association presents The Pageant, “A Growing Force for Freedom” at Central High School Auditorium, March 21, 1952.
36 The Story of Our Chalet, by Falk [Falk means leader and is a title not a name] – this is the story of the Chalet presented to The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts by Mrs. James J. Storrow in 1932. The Chalet is a hotel, day camp, conference and recreation center in Adelboden, Switzerland. In 1952 Mrs. William Trostel visited the Chalet and brought a Orr Felt and Blanket Company wool blanket for use in the Chalet. There are three post cards of the Chalet and a letter from the Falk thanking her. There is also a description of Mrs. Trostel’s visit typed on “The Foreign Service of the United States of America” stationery.
37 “Happy Haven Happening”, Sunday May 4, 1975 – an invitation to a Wiener Roast for Girl Scouts and their favorite ladies.
38 Two copies of a Proclamation signed by Piqua Mayor Sam Jackson, Jr. proclaiming March 9-15, 1980 Girl Scout Week in Piqua.
39 Piqua Girl Scout Fly Up – Bridging Event – May 18, 1980 at Piqua East Mall – a program with lists of the members of all the local Girl Scout Troops and the girls who are moving up from Brownies to Girl Scouts and the girls who are moving up a level in scouting.
40 Order of service for the funeral a Julie Therese Eckstein a member of Troop 898 Girl Scouts at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and School. She died August 4, 1980 at Children’s Medical Center in Dayton. She was 9 years old.
41 Piqua Girl Scout Reunion, 1925-1981 – held April 9, 1981 at Westminster Presbyterian Church (the meeting place of Piqua’s first troop) – program
42 Piqua Girl Scout Fly Up – Bridging Event – June 7, 1981 at Hance Pavilion at Fountain Park – a program with lists of the members of all the local Girl Scout Troops. There are three copies of the program.

SERIES IV: 16 mm Movie Film from Madras, India and supporting documents

52 Girl Scouts in India – 16 mm movie film taken of a Girl Guide [British equivalent of Girl Scouts] Rally in Madras, India on February 28, 1950. The film was taken by Mrs. Robert B. (Martha Jane) Streeper the wife of the American Consul General in Madras, India. The length of the film is approximately 15 minutes. The film was sent to Mrs. Don F. (Ruth Ellen) Julien of 249 W. Schreyer Place, Columbus, Ohio. Ruth Ellen Julien is the sister of Martha Jane Streeper.
53 A letter from Martha Jane Wilson Streeper to her sister Mary K. Wilson Trostel [wife of Dr. William W. Trostel of Piqua] written the day after the film was taken in Madras, India. The letter describes the Girl Guides and their similarities and differences to American Girl Scouts. The letter is dated February 29, 1950 and is written on “The Foreign Service of the United States of America” stationery.
54 A note written by Mrs. Don F. Julien (Ruth Ellen Wilson) sister of Mrs. Robert B. Streeper (Martha Jane Wilson) and Mrs. William W. Trostel (Mary K. Wilson). The note was folded and placed inside the box containing the roll of 16 mm movie film of the Girl Guide Rally in Madras, India. The note states that Mrs. Streeper took the film. Also that the troops had gathered in Madras from all over the province to demonstrate their skills before high government officials.
