FRANK AND GLADYS SULLENBERGER COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
The Frank and Gladys Sullenberger Collection was accessioned into the Piqua Public Library as a donation from Mr. and Mrs. James Van Gorden. Frank Sullenberger was a World War I veteran and an employee of French Oil Mill Machinery Company as a pattern maker. The collection contains documents relating to the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Sullenberger and two of their children, Ralph and Thomas.
The Collection is housed in a single Hollinger box containing thirty-two files. The ownership of the literary copyright for these materials has been transferred to the Piqua Public Library. There is no restriction on the use of these materials.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Frank and Gladys Sullenberger Collection is divided into the following three series:

1 Frank Sullenberger, Certificate of Promotion from Private First Class to Corporal in 485 Aero Squadron, Air Service of the United States Army. Dated 16 November 1918 at American Expeditionary Force Headquarters, Chatenay sur Seine, France.
2 Frank Sullenberger, Honorable Discharge from the United States Army dated 3 May 1919 at Camp Sherman, Ohio. His service record is on the back of the discharge certificate.
3 Military Payment Certificate - $1 – for use only in United States Military Establishments by United States Authorized Personnel.
4 World War I Dog Tags issued to Frank Sullenberger, 2349135, PVT. 485 Aero Sqd. USA – 2 tags on an olive green shoe string.
5 World War I Victory Medal for service in France.
6 Award of Disability Allowance to Mr. Frank Sullenberger, who was discharged from the military service as a Corporal, 485 Aero Sqdn. – the disability allowance was $12.00 per month. Dated August 15, 1931.
7 French-English and English-French pocket dictionary carried by Frank Sullenberger in France in World War I.
8 Honorable Discharge From the Ohio State Guard (World War II) issued on 18 February 1943 to Frank Sullenberger, Grade VI, Company “L”, 3rd Bn. 1st Inf. O.S.G. Frank Sullenberger enlisted in the Ohio State Guard on 16 February 1942 at Piqua, Ohio when he was 44 years old (born April 21, 1898). His Company Commander was Captain George P. Wertz.
9 Certificate of Appreciation from the State of Ohio to Frank Sullenberger for his service in the Ohio State Guard. The certificate is signed by Governor Frank J. Lausche.

10 Marriage License – Mr. Frank David Sullenberger and Miss Gladys V. Alexander issued 29 October 1921. The marriage was solemnized on 29 October 1921 by Rev. Jussen Urich, ThD. of the United Brethren Church.
11 Marriage Certificate – issued and signed by Rev. Jussen Urich, ThD.pastor of United Brethren Church. Frank Sullenberger and Gladys Alexander were married in the U.B. Manse, Piqua, OH. on 29 October 1921.
12 Campbell Furniture Co., 410-412 North Main Street, Piqua, Ohio – sales slip for house hold furniture and furnishings for a total of $472.78 sold to Frank Sullenberger, Camp & Virginia Streets for immediate delivery. The date of the sale was December 31, 1921
13 Funeral and burial records for James E. Sullenberger, one week old son of Frank and Gladys Sullenberger: [1] Receipt for purchase of a cemetery lot from Forest Hill Cemetery on November 30, 1934 (Lot 7 Section 10-a single grave) - $9.80. [2] Funeral Purchase Record from Finfrock Funeral Home for services, including casket, and merchandise - $20.00. Purchased by Frank Sullenberger, 901 Park Ave. on behalf of his son James E. Sullenberger, less than 1 week of age. [3] Formal statement of services rendered by Finfrock Funeral Home. The statement (which is not a bill) is dated December 10, 1934 and if for the purchased price - $20.00.
14 Letter to Frank Sullenberger from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Department of Justice, Washington, D. C. dated February 13, 1939. The letter is in response to a previous communication from Frank Sullenberger to the F.B.I. and the letter is signed by John Edgar Hoover, Director.
15 [1] Deed to 1001 Virginia – northeast corner of Virginia and Elm Streets – being parts of In-lots 2719, 2720, 2721. Purchased by Frank D. Sullenberger and Gladys V. Sullenberger from Bertha M. Townsend and Lawrence E. Townsend. [2] Open-End Mortgage made by Frank & Gladys Sullenberger on the property at 1001 Virginia. The mortgage was issued by The Third Savings and Loan Company, Piqua, Ohio in the amount of $3000 on 27 July 1976 and was paid off on 29 February 1980. [3] The two documents were in a blue Piqua National Bank envelope folder.
16 A reminder to Applicants for Social Security Benefits – a reminder to Frank and Gladys Sullenberger that they must report any month in which they earn more than $125.00.
17 Funeral Purchase Record – for funeral expense from Melcher Funeral Home purchased by Ralph Sullenberger for Frank Sullenberger, his father on August 12, 1976 for $2294.13

Mr. and Mrs. Alexander are the parents of Gladys Alexander Sullenberger (Mrs. Frank Sullenberger).
