HISTORY
A dinner meeting of eleven ladies held at Retter’s Tea Room in April, 1926 led to the formation of the Piqua Altrusa Club in September of the same year.
Altrusa’s goal was to build women in character and citizenship. They believed in giving rather than receiving. The Altrusans disbanded in 1999 due to a lack of being un-able to recruit younger members.
Some of their living memorials presented to the city of Piqua include a shelter house at Das Park, a flag pole for the city, and countless scholarships for young women.
Altrusa volunteers staffed the Information Booth at the HoJo Motel, now the Knights Inn; participated in the Piqua Schools RIF Program; Senior All Night Party; United Fund; Meals on Wheels; Rehab Center for Brain Injured Children and Adults and the Nicholas School; and staffed phones for the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon.
They donated to Miami County Hospice, YWCA, Head Start, Hipple Cancer Research, the Miami County Family Abuse Shelter, and the Miami County Cancer Society.
Altrusans will be missed in our community. They gave almost seventy-three years of service to Piqua and its citizens. Well done!
