COURT DOCKET COLLECTION
INTRODUCTION
The Washington Township Justice of the Peace, Springcreek Township Justice of the Peace, City of Piqua Mayor’s Court, City of Piqua Municipal Court Docket Collection [hereafter referred to as the “Court Docket Collection”] was accessioned into the library in November 2001 at the time the city offices moved to the new city building on the corner of Wayne and Water Streets. The collection had previously been housed in a storage room behind the Municipal Court Room on the second floor of the Water Street city building. The collection consists of 93 books, which are labeled and shelved in stacks of three books per stack in the archives. The collection is available to the public and there are no known restrictions on its use. The collection covers the years 1876 to 1951.

HISTORY
In the 1800s, civil and criminal justice rested initially in the hands of the Township Justice of the Peace in rural areas. Inside incorporated cities and towns the Mayor’s Court was established as the court of first hearing for criminal cases while the Justice of the Peace Court handled the civil disputes. This collection of docket books contains records of civil actions beginning in 1876 and of criminal actions beginning in 1882.
In 1921-22 a change was made in the local justice system in the City of Piqua, Washington Township, and Springcreek Township. Civil and criminal cases now appeared before the Municipal Court of the City of Piqua. This practice continued until 1975 when he Miami County Municipal Court was created. The Municipal Court Dockets beginning January 1951 are currently housed in Troy at the offices of the Miami County Municipal Court.
