SPRINGCREEK TOWNSHIP BOARD OF EDUCATION

 AND

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP BOARD OF EDUCATION COLLECTIONS

INTRODUCTION

In July 2004, records of the Springcreek Township Board of Education, and Washington Township Board of Education were accessioned into the Flesh Public Library and Museum Archives.  The Springcreek and Washington Township Boards of Education were formed in approximately 1830 to provide education for the children of the two townships.  At this time and up until 1853, the schools in Piqua were included in the Washington Township Schools.  A state law passed in 1849 allowed the creation of a Union School System with a high school.  In 1853, Piqua voters approved the creation of a Union School System with its own board of education and a high school was constructed on College Street and opened in 1856.  Students from Springcreek and Washington Townships came to Piqua High School after the eighth grade.  This continued until 1968.  In circa 1967, the state legislature passed a law requiring all school districts to have a high school.  Since neither Springcreek nor Washington Townships had a high school, they were forced to consolidate into the Piqua City School District.  This collection ends on June 30, 1968 when the Springcreek and Washington Township Boards of Education ceased to exist.

The collection is housed in three Gaylord 1215 boxes containing 32 files.  These documents are a matter of public record and therefore, there are no restrictions on the use of the materials in this collection.
