HISTORY
A dinner meeting of eleven ladies was held at Retter’s Tea Room in April, 1926. In September of the same year, the Piqua Altrusa Club became a reality. The charter members were: Mary F. Hall, Carrie L. Woodcox, Elizabeth Denman, Augusta Westfall, Jennie Prince, Lillian Hauschildt, Lucy Purdy, Grace DuBois, Irene Hockenberry, Mary Pearson, and Anna Taylor. Lucy Purdy was chosen as the President. Elizabeth Denman was selected as Vice-President; Lillian Hauschildt as Secretary; and Margaret Burnham as Treasurer.
One business meeting and one social meeting were held monthly. The business meetings were held in church social rooms, bank meeting rooms, the YWCA, etc. The Altrusa ladies have been responsible for many charitable projects. They have donated to scores of civic matters, given interest free loans to college students, sponsored a Korean girl’s education through Foster Parents organization, and manned the Piqua Information Booth located at an east entrance to the city, to mention a few. They have been receptive to any local fund raiser and have always contributed generously.
As of October, 1998, Piqua Altrusa is still an active organization and is one Piqua can be very proud to have in the city.
