THE PROGRESS CLUB COLLECTION

 

INTRODUCTION

 

The Progress Club Collection was accessioned into the Flesh Public Library Archives on March 25, 1986.

 

The collection fills one Hollinger box and five individual file folders.

 

The collection covers the years 1928 to 1961. 

 

There are no restrictions on the use of this collection and the literary copyright has been deeded to the public.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENTS

 

The Progress Club Collection is divided into two series:  Minutes of Meetings, and Miscellaneous.

 

SERIES I –MINUTES OF MEETINGS: covers minutes from 1928 to 1934 and 1953 to 1961.  Member rosters are also included.

 

SERIES II –MISCELLANEOUS: covers their constitution and history of the club -1928-1938, written by Mrs. R.L. Warthman, some notes and receipts.

 

HISTORY

 

Mrs. C.G. Lunan was elected the first president of the New Northwest Literary Club.  Mrs. Ralph May was first Vice-President; Mrs. T.P. Thompson was first Secretary; and Mrs. W. R. Weber was first Treasurer.  Other charter members were Mrs. R.L. Warthman, Mrs. Margaret Ankerman, Mrs. G.F. Ruffner, Mrs. Ervin Artman, Mrs. F.P. Brotherton, and Mrs. Robert Earl.

 

The first meeting was held at Wilder School on January 18, 1928.  Three meetings later the name “Progress Club” was chosen as a permanent name.  Membership grew with the second meeting.

 

The club’s programs were devoted to current events, literature, speakers, music, and travel.

 

The members were very caring ladies and donated generously to the poor and needy in this area.
