COLUMBIAN CLUB COLLECTION ADDITIONAL
INTRODUCTION
The Columbian Club Collection Additional was accessioned into the Flesh Public Library Archives and Special Collections in several sections beginning in 1993 and ending in 2003. The collection consists of meeting minutes, membership and attendance records, annual reports, program materials, program booklets, eulogies, and photographs. This is an open collection and more material may be added at later dates. The collection is housed in two Hollinger boxes. Box one contains 32 files, and box two contains 17 files. There is no known restriction on the use of this material.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The materials in the Columbian Club Collection Additional is divided into the following five series:
SERIES I: Meeting Minutes, Membership and Attendance Rosters, and Annual Reports. 1985-2003. These materials are found in Box 1 Files 1-18.
SERIES II: Membership Status. This includes the names of active members and their status in the years 1962-1987. These materials are found in Box 1 File 19.
SERIES III: Materials for monthly programs. This includes scripts and notes used in several programs presented to the group. These materials are found in Box 1 Files 20-28.
SERIES IV: Program Booklets. Six booklets are included in these materials. Booklets for 1930-31, 50th, 70th, 75th, and 85th Anniversary Program booklets. These materials are found in Box 1 File 29.
SERIES V: Eulogies of club members. Included are seventeen eulogies of club members from 1966-2001. These materials are found in Box 1 File 30.
SERIES VI: Photographs These materials are found in Box 1 Files 31 and 32.
SERIES VII: Additional Program Booklets. These materials are found in Box 2 Files 1-13.
SERIES VIII: Meeting Minutes, Membership and Attendance Rosters. These materials are found in Box 2 Files 14-17.
HISTORY
The Columbian Club was formed in Piqua in October, 1892. This club was originally called “The Somerset Club,” and this name was used but a short time. “Columbian Club” was chosen because of the 400th Anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. The club has always been patriotic, civic minded and democratic in its procedures and programs.
Charter members were: Mrs. Elizabeth Angle, Mrs. Kate Barnett, Mrs. Irene Byrkett, Mrs. Frances M. Clark, Mrs. Laura Crozier, Mrs. Amelia Daniels, Mrs. Kate Gray, Miss Adeline Gross, Mrs. S.F. Gray, Miss Katurah Hatch, Mrs. Louise Hedges, Mrs J.H. Lowe, Miss Anna Morris, Miss Nellie Morris, Mrs. Laura J. McKinney, Mrs. Elizabeth G. Nellis, Mrs. Kate H. Rankin, Miss Jessie Sniff, Mrs. Binnie Sneezey, Miss Martha Weddell, Mrs. Hannah Wertz, Mrs. Clara Whitlock, Mrs. Laura Wherley, Mrs. Alwilda M. Ziegenfelder and Mrs. Samuel Zollinger.
Programs presented and prepared by members at monthly meetings ranged from the past to present on literature, music, art, and their related subjects. Through their programs, the Columbian Club has visited many cities and countries, studying their peoples, history, customs, and culture.
The Columbian Club has donated very generously to numerous worthy causes in this area. It has always been constructive in its ideas and productive in its efforts and growth.
The Columbian Club – past, present and future – holds a vital position in Piqua.
