The Evelyn Mahrt Collection

 

Introduction

 

The Evelyn Mahrt Collection is the result of a series of large donations over the course of the winter, spring and summer of 2021.  The inventory can be found in Box 1, File 1 of the collection. The Evelyn Mahrt Collection was accessioned into the Piqua Public Library Archives and Special Collections on October 12, 2021.  The paintings, sculptures, and other works of art are housed in the Art Rooms on the third floor of the Piqua Public Library.  The print documentation is housed in five Hollinger boxes.  The collection has been deeded over to the Piqua Public Library and is available for inspection and research by the public.  There are no known restrictions on the use of these materials.

The Evelyn Mahrt Collection is divided into the following four series:

File      1          Inventory of the Evelyn Mahrt Donation in the period February through September 2021.

  • 8 ½” wide x 11” high pen and ink colored fashion drawing of a lady in a long yellow and purple dress with short jacket and black high heel shoes.  The drawing was signed by Florence Miranda and dated 1932.  The drawing is in a brown wood frame 10 ½” wide x 13 ½” high and is under glass. 
  • 16 ½” x 12 ¾” black wood framed print of a James Montgomery Flagg color lithograph entitled, “With this Ring I Thee Wed” and is of a man and a woman seated in chairs facing each other and the man smoking a cigar is blowing a smoke ring which the lady is trying to ketch on the third finger of her left hand.  The print is dated 1906 by the Judge Co.  12 ¾” x 16 ½” black wood framed print of a James Montgomery Flagg color Lithograph entitled, “Say When!” and is of a man and a woman standing and looking into each other’s eyes while she tries to fill his drink glass with water and is running it over. The print is by the Leslie-Judge Co. and is c. 1910.  **Included in Deed of Gift dated February 19, 2021.
  • 10 ½” x 7 ½” black/white photograph matted and framed in a black wood frame 16” x 13 ½”.  The photograph is entitled “Birds of a Feather” and is a photo of 8 teenagers (5 boys and 3 girls sitting on a railing or standing next to it on Courthouse Square, Dayton, Ohio.  The photographer is Evelyn J. Mahrt and the photo is dated 1989. 
  • Reed & Barton sterling silver pickle fork with "Taste of the Arts" engraved on the front of the handle and "96" engraved on the back of the handle. The fork is 5 1/2" long.  It is housed in a white and red cardboard box with lid and Reed & Barton on the lid.  The box is 6 1/2" x 1 3/4" x 3/4".  On the inside is also a green and white "Taste of the Arts" pin - 1 1/2" diameter with a safety pin fastener. 
  • Lapel pin - 1" x 13/16" gold metal and acrylic pin with claw fastener.  Printed on the front: "Miami County Milestones, Bicentennial Celebration, 1807-2007" and with the U.S. flag, Ohio flag and Miami County flag. 
  • Print #22 of a watercolor painting of the road up to the Johnston Farm House by E. K. Hrivnak dated June 21, 2007.  The print is 15 1/2" wide X 12 3/4" high and is matted out to 20" wide X 16" high.

  • Original watercolor painting of the pediment and urn atop the Joe Thoma & Sons Jewelers building at 312 N. Main St., Piqua, OH.  The painting is by Pamela Kunk.  The painting is 9" wide X 11" high and is matted out to 14" wide X 16" high.
  • Original watercolor painting of Piqua Milling Company mill at 111 N. Main St., Piqua.  The painting is by Eva. K. Hrivnak, c. 2007.  The painting is 9" wide X 12" high and is matted out to 14" wide X 18" high.
  • Painting - 6" x 11" oil on wood with antiqued wood frame, 6 1/2" x 11 1/2" - painting of a colonial man in blue tricorn hat, red coat with blue trim, blue knee pants, white stockings black shoes holding a drooping lily.  The painting is by P. Good.
  • Painting - 6" x 11" oil on wood with antiqued wood frame, 6 1/2" x 11 1/2" - painting of a colonial woman in a blue dress with red and white trim, white stockings and a red hat.  The painting is by P. Good.
  • Painting - 6" x 11" oil on wood with antiqued wood frame, 6 1/2" x 11 1/2" - painting of a British Red Coat soldier in the American Revolution with his red coat, tall red hat, white pants and black boots holding a rifle with a bayonet.  The painting is by M. Patterson, Piqua.
  • Painting - 11" x 8 1/2" oil on wood with black wood frame, 11 1/2" x 8 1/2" - painting of an American eagle logo with wings spread looking to the left, a red, white and blue shield on his chest and holding two spear point flags in his talons.  The painting is by M. Patterson.
  • Painting - 6" x 11" oil on wood with black wood frame, 6 1/2" x 11 1/2" - painting of a British revolutionary war drummer in red coat, white pants, black boots and black hat.  He is carrying a blue and white drum and holding drumsticks.  The painting is by C. Graham, a Piqua, Ohio artist.
  • Painting - 6" x 11" oil on wood with black wood frame, 6 1/2" x 11 1/2" - painting of a Colonial revolutionary war fife player in blue coat, white pants, black boots and black hat.  He is playing a gold colored fife.  The painting is by C. Graham, a Piqua, Ohio artist.
  • Painting - 8 1/2" x11" oil on wood with black wood frame, 9" x 11 1/2" - painting of a Colonial revolutionary war Flag carrier in blue coat, white pants, black boots and black hat.  He is carrying an American flag with 12 stars and 10 stripes.  The painting is by C. Graham, a Piqua, Ohio artist.
  • A page of Estella Yenney's calligraphy - sayings by "wise" people - R. W. Emerson; Job; Aesop; F. Kossuth.  The calligraphy is on an 8" x 10 1/2" piece of lined notebook paper punched with 5 holes.
  • Painting - 6 1/2" x 6" oil on wood with a black wood frame, 7" x 6 1/2" - the painting is a cartoonish depiction of a red, white and blue riverboat on blue water with black accents.  The background of the painting is gold paint.  The painting is by R. Good (Rose Good), a Piqua art teacher.  On the back is written in pen: Happy Birthday, David, July 1965, Love, "The Goods" Piqua, Ohio.
  • Wood carvings of the "Three Bears" by Jim Foster.  The carvings were done in 2007.  "Pappa Bear" is 1 5/8" wide X 3 3/8" high X 1 3/4" deep.  "Momma Bear" is 1 3/8" wide X 2 1/2" high X 1 3/8" deep.  "Baby Bear" is 7/8" wide X 1 1/2" high X 3/4" deep.
  • Painting - 1 1/4" X 2" acrylic and ink painting in a 2 1/4" X 3" gold metal frame - the painting is of a red wing black bird.  The painting is by "Nancy 6 '46".
  • Painting - 1 3/4" X 2 1/8" watercolor painting in a 3 3/4" X 4" gold wood frame.  The painting is of a rural mail box with its flag up and door open and on a post with a brace. The painting is by Earnes 7.
  • Painting - 7" X 9" acrylic on board - no frame.  The painting is titled "Pepper II" and is of a red pepper and a blue pepper hanging by their stems from a wire.  The painting was done by Sergey Kirilchuk in 1991.  Copies of a newspaper article relating to the painting are attached.
  • Glass egg with figure inside - the egg is titled "Early Work" and is by Dennis Walker.  The egg is 3 1/2" high X 2" diameter at widest point.
  • Sculpture of a sleeping cat laying on top of a piece of dark gray slate or granite.  The base is 7 1/16" X 5 1/8" X 11/16".  The cat is brown and is 6" long X 3" wide x 1 7/8" high.  The sculpture is by Shirley Jeckering of Dayton, Ohio.
  • Pottery sugar bowl with lid, beige with brown and black markings on the sides and top.  The bowl is 3 1/2" high X 4" diameter at the top and 2 1/2" diameter at the bottom, the bowl is 3" deep.  The lid is 3 7/8" diameter x 5/8" high. There is a knob handle protruding from the center of the lid.  The knob is 7/8" diameter X 3/4" high.  The pottery was done by Doug Smith in 2018.
  • Pottery jug, light brown with brown, white and black tulip flowers around the side.  The white flowers are pointing up and the brown flowers are pointing down, some of the flowers have four petals and some have three petals.  The neck of the jug is darker brown.  The jug is 10" high X 7 1/2" diameter in the middle, 4 1/2" diameter at the bottom and 1 1/2" diameter at the top of the neck.  The jug was produced by AKA from Troy, Ohio in 1970.
  • Pottery bud vase in the shape of a jug.  The vase is a darker shade of aqua with drips running down the front and burgundy splash near the top running over and toward the bottom.  The vase is 5 3/4" high X 4" diameter in the middle, 2" diameter at the bottom, and 7/8" diameter at the top of the neck.  The neck extends up 3/4" from the rest of the vase.  The vase was produced by Dan (?) Paldino.
  • Painting - oil on paper - Folk Art - the painting is 11 1/2" wide X 15 1/2" high, the oak wood frame is 14" wide X 18" high.  The painting is of a boy sitting in a chair who has fallen asleep while stringing popcorn from a bowl, the boy is in a brown wood arm chair and he is wearing a red shirt, blue pants and blue tennis shoes.  Above and hovering over him is an angel in white with wings spread in an attitude of prayer.  The painting was done by Joan Edge and was purchased in Piqua by Evelyn Mahrt in the 1990's.
  • Painting - watercolor - the painting is 11 1/2" X 8 1/2" - it is matted in a dark wood frame which is 16 1/2" x 13 3/4".  The painting is of two pots of red flowers sitting in open windows with the green shutters opened back.  The title of the painting is "Shutter Light" and the artist is Linda Ballard of Greenville, Ohio.
  • Painting - watercolor - the painting is 7 1/2" X 9 1/2" - it is matted in a dark wood frame which is 12 1/2" x 15 1/2".  The painting is of daisies, white with orange centers, and a yellow day lily with green leaves surrounding them.  The artist is Matilda Greca of Piqua, Ohio and probably painted in the 1990's.
  • Painting - watercolor - the painting is 8" X 10" - it is matted in a light oak frame which is 12 1/4" X 15 1/4".  The painting is a still life of a bushel of apples and a pan of apples sitting on a table and 5 other apples sitting around on the table.  Behind the table is a green leafy bush with red flowers.  The artist is Nanette? and the painting was purchased in Piqua.
  • Painting - watercolor - the painting is 8 1/2" X 5 1/2" matted in a silver metal frame which is 15 1/4" x 11 7/8".  The painting is of a winter snow scene on a farm.  There is a yellow story and a half farm house with smoke coming out of its red chimney and trees with no leaves around the house.  In the foreground is a red two-story barn with tan outbuildings and fence posts leading from barn to the bottom of the painting.  There are blue/gray hills and forest in the background and a gray sky.  The artist is Mary Janes of Piqua, Ohio (deceased) and the painting was purchased by E. Mahrt at an estate sale in Piqua in 2017.
  • Painting - watercolor on paper - the painting is 8 1/2" X 11 1/2" matted but unframed.  The matting is 15" X 20".  The painting is of the head of an American Bald Eagle on the background of the U.S. Flag.  The title of the painting is "American Simbol" and is by Russian artist Sergay Kirilchuk.  E. Mahrt bought the painting at the Second Story Gallery, Piqua, Ohio.  The painting is dated 1991.
  • Painting - watercolor - the painting is 14" X 10" matted but unframed.  The matting is 18" X 14".  The painting is of a weathered red barn with a white roof and one story attachment on the front.  The barn is surrounded by grass with trees in the back.  There is a 2 rail wood fence across the front of the barn and a tractor road in front of the fence.  The painting appears to represent early fall with a hint of color in some of the trees.  The painting is by Rodney Bensman.
  • Painting - oil on canvas panel - the painting is 20" X 16" unframed.  The painting is of a dock side farmer's vegetable market with a sailing ship in the background.  There are three venders at their stalls.  The painting is by Mary Lou Hudson, Piqua, Ohio.
  • Painting - watercolor - the painting is 18" X 14" matted but unframed.  The matting is 22 1/4" X 18 1/2".  The painting is of ducks by a lake or pond, showing two white ducks, a black and white duck and eight brown ducks.  The painting is by Mary Janes.
  • Painting - watercolor on paper - the painting is 18" X 12".  The paper is 20 3/4" X 15".  The painting is not framed or matted.  The painting is of trees and brush along a river and reflecting into the water.  The painting employs alternating red and blue sections with black birds in flight and some red berries or flowers to the left.  The painting is by Mary Jane Treon.
  • Painting - acrylic on heavy green paper - the painting is 28" X 22".  The painting is not framed or matted.  The painting is of two branches of Prairie Crab Apple in full bloom.  The leaves are green tinged with yellow.  The flowers are white with purple, lavender and red hues.  The painting is by Estella Yenney.
  • Charcoal portrait of girl age 8 to 10 years.  The picture is 19" X 25".  The portrait is of a beautiful young lady with shoulder length hair and bangs.  The picture is by Estella Yenney.
  • Pen and ink drawing on tissue paper [8 1/2" X 11"] of a large hardwood tree and surrounding brush.  The drawing is by Estella Yenney and it is very fragile.
  • Post card pen and ink drawing of a pheasant by Estella Yenney.  The card is 6" X 4 1/4".
  • Pencil fashion drawing of a lady in a long striped coat, wearing gloves, carrying a shoulder strap purse and wearing a broad brimmed hat.  The drawing is by Estella Yenney.
  • Pencil fashion sketch of a ladies two piece suit.  Sketch by Estella Yenney.
  • Painting - watercolor on paper - the painting is 12" X 9".  The painting is of trees and brush around a lake and reflecting in the lake.  The colors are variations of greens, reds, browns, purples with black accents.  The painting is by Estella Yenney.
  • Two pages of art instruction drawings in red ink.  The drawings show proportions, positions and shading of the female body in preparation for learning to do fashion drawings.  These two pages are a part of the instructional materials produced by Estella Yenney for the correspondence course in commercial art she taught for the Berry Correspondence School in Pleasant Hill, Ohio.  The drawings are by Estella Yenney.
  • A calligraphy exercise on 11" x 13" tan pulp paper.  The calligraphy was done by Paula Myers.  Text of the calligraphy is: "When in charge, ponder. When in trouble, delegate.  When in doubt, mumble."  The calligraphy was completed as a requirement for Estella Yenney's calligraphy correspondence class at the Berry Correspondence School.
  • Painting - pastel chalk drawing - 13 1/2" X 18", of a young mother and her infant daughter by Estella Yenney, 1976.
  • Painting - watercolor on paper - 18" X 11 1/2" - painting is of a lake or large pond with trees surrounding it. In the foreground is a dock extending out into the lake and two row boats, one on either side of the dock.  The painting is by Estella Yenney.
  • Painting - pastel on paper - 10 1/2" X 14" - the painting is still life of a blue pot of red and pink flowers with green leaves and black accented stems.  The pot is set against a blue/green background.  The painting is by Estella Yenney.
  • Painting - watercolor - 12 1/2" X 14 1/2" - still life of a clear glass vase with pressed or cut glass rings around the top.  The vase is holding two hydrangea blooms with stems and leaves.  The vase is sitting on a tan table or counter and is painted against a wash pink background.  The painting is by Estella Yenney.
  • Painting - pastel chalk drawing portrait - 11" X 15", of a young girl by Estella Yenney.  The painting is signed "Estella Jeanne."
  • Painting - pencil drawing of trees on a hillside and on distant hills.  Drawing is signed "E. J. Yenney."  Estelle Jeanne Yenney.
  • Painting - watercolor on paper - 9" X 12" paper.  The painting, which covers and area 4" X 3" on the upper part of the paper is of a cluster of multi-colored hydrangea blooms.  Painting by Estella Yenney.
  • "Dinky Dot Dolls” - paper doll with attachable clothes designed by Estella Jean.  The doll is of a little girl.  The doll and clothes were designed using pastel paint and were attached to a card stock piece of paper 11" X 15."  The collection contains the girl, her dog, a hat, a long dress with jacket, a shorter blue dress, two skirts, a jacket and a black collar.  The designs and painting were done by Estella Yenney.
  • "Dinky Dot Dolls" by Estella Jean.  Paper Doll cats, one white and one black with a dress, a coat and hat, and a pair of belted bib overalls to put on the white cat.  The designs are painted on a piece of 11" X 15" card stock paper.  The designs employ pen and black ink and pastel chalk.  The designs are by Estella Yenney.
  • Pen and red ink drawings, 11 1/4" X 13 1/2", of women putting on makeup.  These were part of the instructional materials used in the Commercial Art course Estella Yenney taught through the Berry Correspondence School, Pleasant Hill, Ohio.  Drawings were done by Estella Yenney.
  • Four pages of pencil sketches of adults in social settings.  These sketches were done by Estella Yenney on October 29, 1982.
  • Four pages of red ink drawings and pencil drawings showing proper form and proportion for drawing infants and children.  These were part of the instruction materials used in the Commercial Art course taught by Estella Yenney at the Beery Correspondence School, Pleasant Hill, Ohio.  The drawings were done by Estella Yenney.
  • Seven pages of red ink and pencil cartoon drawings.  These were part of the instruction materials used in the Cartooning Art course taught by Estella Yenney at the Beery Correspondence School, Pleasant Hill, Ohio.  Drawings by Estella Yenney.
  • Pottery bowl - 16 1/2" diameter X 3 1/2" high - the edges are scalloped in 5 sections and a face is painted in each section.  The faces are white with brown eyes, red lips and a single line for a nose.  The edge is a one inch band of purple.  The 5 sections are set off by 5 burgundy bars that are approximately 1 1/2" wide running from the outer edge to a purple center swirl.  Blue triangles set off the faces and the bottom of the burgundy bars.  On one the edge of one segment is written "SoAoU of 1105."  The potter who made this bowl and painted and fired it is Sally Jo Havas.
  • Cartoonists' Exchange, Pleasant Hill, Ohio - trifold brochure with a pencil, 20 sheets of 3 1/4" X 6" paper in a pad, 10 Formulas for Creating Humor and a cartoon stating that "Fortunes are Lost in Ideas Forgotten!"  The brochure is advertising the Home Study Course of the Cartoonists' Exchange.
  • Handmade Christmas card by Charlotte Getner, c. 1970 - front is a "snow lady" in a hat decorated with red bow and red flowers.  Inside is "The Season's Greetings and sincere good wishes for your happiness."
  • Handmade Christmas Card by Charlotte Getner, C. 1970 - front: red outlined in green border, holly leaves and berries on upper left and lower right and large block letters spelling "HELLO" in red outlined in green across the middle.  Inside: "Best wisher for a merry Christmas."
  • Handmade Christmas card by Charlotte Getner, c. 1970 - Front: in the middle is a brown cat seated on a red piano stool playing a red baby grand piano.  Above the piano are music notes and a staff swirling above, through and below the piano.  On the staff on both sides of the piano are the words "Merry".  On the staff at the bottom is the word "Christmas."  Inside: "To Wish You...a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
  • Candle holder - metal - the dish like base is 6 1/2" diameter X 1 1/4" high - the center candle stick holder is 5 1/4" high X 1 1/4" diameter with a 2" diameter metal plate on top with a 7/8" hole to hold the candle.  There is a beige 4 1/2" X 7/8" diameter wax candle with the holder.  The holder is painted a darker tan and decorated with dark red flowers and green leaves with pink and green outline inside the base and green with red dots on the handle.  The painting is in the form of TOLE PAINTING and it was painted by Judy Fogt.
  • Tolle Painting on a glass vase by Virginia Kleinhenz.  Vase is painted deep green and on the green is painted a small branch and five whited tinged in pink dogwood blossoms.
  • Tolle painting on an old typewriter cartridge container.  The entire container is painted in an antiqued dark red tinged in black.  The top of the container has a two story house with smoke coming out of a chimney and tulips on both sides.  The top is 2 1/4" diameter.  The bottom is 2 1/8" diameter and 1" high.
  • Watercolor painting of waves breaking on a rocky ocean coast with a lighthouse in the upper right background.  The painting is by George Crown and is dated 1996.  The painting is 21" wide X 14" high and is matted in a maple colored wood frame that is 28" wide X 21 3/4" high.
  • Brass Candlestick holder from St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Piqua, Ohio - very old.  The holder is 7" high, 3 5/8" diameter at the base with a 2 1/2" diameter X 3/8" deep drip cup near the top.  There is an 8" long X 7/8" diameter white candle included.
  • Brass Candlestick holder from St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Piqua, Ohio - very old.  The holder is 7" high, 3 5/8" diameter at the base with a 2 1/2" diameter X 3/8" deep drip cup near the top. There is a crack in a brass ring near the middle of the holder.   There is an 8" long X 7/8" diameter white candle included.
  • Photograph and oil on board - "Self-Portrait" by Jim Siegel.  The painting is 8" X 8" in a gold wood frame 9 1/2" wide X 9 1/4" high X 15/16" thick.  There is a photo painting of Siegel and over the top of it is a cut out green multi-color giving the finished work a three dimensional effect.  Siegel was an Art Teacher at Edison State College c. 1988-1992 and also worked at Second Story Framing.
  • Oil on canvas - abstract on canvas attached to an 8" round board that is 1" thick with a 7/8" dia. X 7/8" high wood drawer pull attached to the top and a 35" long gold chain attached to each side giving the overall effect of a painted canteen.  On the back in blue is written "1169613" and "Steven Edward Siegel."
  • Abstract watercolor of trees painted by John Joseph Albert (Past cloistered monk) - artist and writer of spiritual books, Piqua, Ohio - original watercolor - painting is 9 1/2" wide X 7 1/2" high - matted and in an oak wood frame that is 14 7/8" wide X 11 3/4" wide.
  • Plaster casting and colored of Jesus walking on a stone path holding a lamb and surrounded by three sheep he is holding a Shepard’s crook that is painted brown, the grass and plants are green, the stones in the walkway are white tinged in brown, Jesus robe is white highlighted in light blue.  On the back is printed "From Ely and Helen Sutton, May 6, 1946."
  • Oil on slate of a barn and out buildings and silo in the fall. The grass and trees are shaded of light brown to brown, the field is golden ready for harvest, and the barn is light gray with a red roof.  There is a leather thong tied through holes in the slate and used to hang the slate.  The art work is by Max Cummings of Piqua.  The slate is 12 1/4" wide X 8 1/4" high.
  • Oil on slate of the Spring House at Johnston's Farm.  The painting is done in early summer with the grass and trees in full green.  The Spring House is a burnt red and the roof is white tinged in brown.  There is a leather thong tied through holes in the slate and used to hang the slate.  The slate is 10" wide X 5 1/4" high.  The art work is by Max Cummings of Piqua.
  • Watercolor on Yupo paper of a farm house small barn and silos at night.  There is a large tree to the right of center and a partially seen full moon behind the tree.  The painting is in many shades of blues and black.  The painting is 5 1/4" wide X 3 1/4" high.  It is matted and framed in maple colored wood frame with black edges.  The frame is 9" wide X 7" high.  The artist is Sandy Kraack and the painting won the 2015 Darke County Fair 2nd place in the miniature division.
  • Coffee tin turned into a small basket with a handle.  The basket is decorated with cut out hearts and crosses.  There is a row of alternating hearts and crosses around the top and bottom of the basket.  In the middle is a row of larger hearts.  Each of the hearts and crosses is surrounded by four dots (small holes on both sides above and below).  The basket is 4 1/4" wide X 2 1/2" high X 2 1/2" across.  The handle is curved above the basket and attached to both sides - The curved handle extends 3 1/4" up from the basket.  The basket was created by Herb Wilmer using a process called "Burnt Welding."  It was sold at the Piqua Heritage Festival in the 1990's.
  • German language Roman Catholic prayer book - Christliches Leben in Gott. Ausermahlte Katholische Andacgteb (Christian Life in God.  Full Catholic Devotions.) The book belonged to Margueritha (Magaratha) Koehler, the Aunt of Evelyn J. Mahrt.   Published in New York and Cincinnati, c. 1906.

  • Oil painting of people seated in pews in a protestant church (a King James Bible is in one of the pew racks).  The painting is 30" wide x 24" high.  It is matted and framed in a brown stained wood frame that is 36 1/2" x 30 1/2".  The artist is James F.   • "The Good Wife and Mother . . ." by Evelyn J. Perreé Mahrt, 1996.  The work is 10 3/8" wide x 13 3/8" high and is framed in a brown wood frame, 13 3/4" wide x 16 3/4" high.  The work contains drawing of four eyes, each in a small gold wood frame, two at the top of the work and two at the bottom.  In the center is a piece of wood 6" wide x 1" high x 1/2" thick and partially covered by a crocheted doily giving the illusion of a mantel piece.  On the doily are two brass candlesticks, 1 1/2" high each holding a white candle, 1" high.  Between the two candlesticks is a drawing of a mouth in a smaller frame than the eyes.  Everything is mounted on a black background.

Swartz - 2007.  The drawing is of a barn with two cupolas, a silo, an attached shed and a chicken house separate from the barn.  The drawing is done on six 3 1/2" wide boards that are 17 5/8" long and mounted inside a wood frame made from 1 1/2" x 3/4" boards.  The painting is 21" wide x 17 5/8" high and is framed out to 22 1/2" wide X 19" high.

  • Collage built around a photograph of a young male in front of the old courthouse in Dayton, OH.  The collage is built on a gray wash board framed in black wood.  Behind the picture is a manila envelope with "Damaged Male" written on the left lower corner and Evelyn Mahrt on the right lower corner.  Behind the envelope can be seen envelopes from the United States Historical Society; Dayton Newspapers, Inc.; MetLife; an old greeting card; National Federation for the Blind.  The back in 19 5/8" wide x 15 5/8" high framed out to 22 1/2" wide x 18 1/2" high.

  • Print of a late renaissance painting of Joseph, Mary and a young (5 or 6 years old) Jesus outside of a house.  Type of print that could be found in most Roman Catholic gift shops.  The print is 6" wide x 8" high and is in a dark wood frame 7 3/8" wide x 9" high.
  • A print of a version of the "Last Supper" by Da Vinci.  We know Da Vinci painted the original but who painted this copy is not determined.  The print is 19 1/2" wide x 14 1/2" high.  The print is framed in brown wood that is 21 1/2" wide x 16 1/2" high.  This particular print came from the Burke House on S. Wayne St., Piqua.  The Burke's were distant cousins of Evelyn Mahrt.
  • "Agony in the Garden."  This particular print came from the Burke House on S. Wayne St., Piqua.  The Burke's were distant cousins of Evelyn Mahrt.  This is a print of a painting showing Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.  He is alone.  No other disciples are present.  The print is 19 1/2" wide x 14 1/2" high.  It is in a brown wood frame that is 21 1/2" wide x 16 1/2" high.
  • Lithograph of the "Last Supper by Da Vinci.  The picture is 25 1/2" wide x 11 3/4" high.  It is framed under glass in an old gold pressed wood frame that is 27 1/2" wide x 13 1/2" high.  The lithograph belonged to the Koehler Family.
  • "Sick Box" - This box hung in a home in a family shrine.  The box is made of wood and colored glass.  The box is 23" high x 13 1/2" wide x 3 1/2" deep.  Two inches down from the top and two inches in from each side is a compartment covered with colored glass.  The compartment is 9 1/2" wide x 13 1/2" high.  On the glass are painted two crowned columns one on each side.  Above are two angels.  Across the bottom are the words, "Blessed Be Thy Holy Name."  Behind the clear portion of the glass is a simplified version of Michelangelo's Pieta.  The statue is approximately 10" high x 7" wide x 2 1/4" deep.  Approximately 15 1/2" down from the top on both sides are two small brass candle holders which are 2 1/4" x 7/8" x 3/4".  Approximately 2" up from the bottom and 2" in from each side is a compartment 9 1/2" wide x 4 3/4" high x 3 1/4" deep.  This compartment is covered by a door which opens down to become a small table.  The door is 11" wide x 5 1/2" high x 3/4" thick.  The door is hinged at the bottom and when opened is held in place by 5" chains so that it form a tray or table.  The front of the door has a 9" wide by 3 1/2" high glass panel.  Behind the glass is a version of Da Vinci's The Last Supper. Inside the compartment are two small glass bottles (empty) labeled "Holy Water" one with a cork on top and the other with a sprinkler top.  There is a silver 5" diameter tray, a medallion and a Scapular that says, "Whosoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire."

  • Crucifix - 11 1/4" high x 4 1/4" across.  The base is 3" high and 2 3/4" diameter at the bottom.  The cross is wood, Jesus is depicted in metal and is nailed through both hands to the cross bar and the foot rest is nailed to the vertical post.  The crucifix came from the house of the Burke Family on S. Wayne St. in Piqua.  Neva, Treva and Pauline Burke were distant cousins of Evelyn Mahrt.

  • Statue of Jesus after the resurrection.  The statue is 21" high X 6 1/2" wide (at his arms) X 5 1/4" deep (at the base).  The statue is painted.  Jesus is bare footed, with a beard, wearing white and burgundy robes and the places where the nails pierced his hands are clearly visible.  Standing out on his chest is the "Sacred Heart."  The sculptor is not identified.
  • Two pages of early drawings by Douglas S. Smith.  The drawings are done on 24" wide X 18" high paper torn from an artist's sketch pad and are done in black ink or marker.  The first drawing is of a young man reclining on a couch and an older man behind a desk.  There are words floating in the air above the drawing whose meaning and letter formations are obscure.  The scene and words may be an attempt to depict a psychiatrist’s office and the words are meant to depict the "word salad" which is found in some schizophrenics.  The second drawing is of the younger man reclining on a couch and an older man standing at the feet of the younger man probably the psychiatrist (he is similar in both drawings).  Surrounding the younger man in the background are seven women in various sizes and shapes.
  • Etching plate for "Mystery Story," a project completed by Evelyn Mahrt as a student at Wright State University.  The plate is 9" wide X 12" high and is a metal plate.
  • "Etching Stages for 'Mystery Story'" - a series of eight black ink prints showing the stages in etching from the beginning to the final finished and matted print.  The first seven prints are 9" wide X 12" high and are printed on paper that is 11" wide X 15" high.  The final print is 9" wide X 12" high and is matted out to 16" wide X 20" high but not framed.  The prints were done by Evelyn Mahrt at Wright State University and the final matted print has a poem by Mother Teresa at the bottom.
  • Etching Plate for Fountain Park by Evelyn Mahrt.  The plate is 12" wide X 9" high.
  • "Steps to Learning, 4/5" by Evelyn Mahrt.  This is a black ink print off of an etching plate of a stair case with metal banisters.  The stairs go both up and down and are probably in a school building.  The print is 9" wide X 12" high and is printed on white paper that is 11" wide X 15" high.
  • Copy of a pen and ink drawing by Evelyn Mahrt of the "Prairie Style" house at 620 Caldwell St., Piqua, Ohio.  The copy is 11" wide X 8 1/2“ high.  The original pen & ink drawing is much larger and was given to Mr. VonBauer, the owner of the house.  The original is dated 1990/1991.  There is a second page to the copy showing the copy in notecard size and a price of $20.00 - $30.00 per 100-150 cards.
  • Charcoal self-portrait by Evelyn Mahrt dated January 11, 1989.  A note on the bottom of the drawing reads, "I was a student at Edison State College at this time."  The drawing is on white paper, 18" wide X 24" high.
  • "Attic Afternoon" - print #737 of 800 of an original watercolor painting by Michael Lange.  The original was done in 1993.  The picture shows a little girl (pre-school age) seated on a braided rug in an attic with her old Raggedy Anne doll in a suitcase, an old baby buggy with a stuffed bear in it, a basket of dried flowers, a wood box and behind the little girl is a double wedding ring quilt.  The little girl is Michael Lange's daughter.  The print was given to Evelyn Mahrt by Michael Lange in 2014.  The print is 22 1/2" wide X 18 1/2" high and is mounted on white foam board that is 28 1/2" wide X 20" high.
  • Black/White matt finish photograph - 10 X 8 - of Evelyn Mahrt at work in a room - probably Edison State College.  The photo is c. 1989.
  • Wood cut for printing.  Wood cut of a tree into a sheet of 1/4" fiber board.  The wood cut is 25" wide X 19" high and is cut into a 32" wide X 24" high sheet of fiber board.  The wood cut was done by Evelyn Mahrt in the 1990's.  The wood cut has been inked more than once.
  • "Arboretum Shadows" by Linda Stiles Smith dated 1997.  This is intaglio print #4 of 15.  The print is of a grove of four trees with the ground clear of underbrush.  The print is 20" wide X 14" high and is matted and framed in a cherry colored wood frame that is 29 1/2" wide X 23 1/2" high.  Linda Stiles Smith currently (2021) lives in Beavercreek, Ohio and is a 1994 graduate of Wright State University.
  • "Seated Boy" by Judy Bogumill-Thaxton.  The painting is acrylic on artist's board and is 12" wide X 16" high.  It is framed in a brown/gold wood frame that is 15 3/4" wide X 18 3/4" high.
  • Watercolor painting of three flowering dogwood trees on top of a rise in the land.  They are painted against a blue/gray sky.  The artist is Donald Earnest of Tipp City, Ohio.  A note by Evelyn Mahrt on the back says that Donald Earnest was a well-known artist especially in the 1990's.  The painting is 14" wide X 10" high and is matted and framed in a gray wood frame that is 21" wide X 17" high.
  • Watercolor of a boy reading a book.  The artist is not identified.  The painting is 7 1/2" wide X 7" high.  It is matted and framed in a brown wood frame that is 15 1/2" wide X 15 1/2" high.  A note stuck on the front said that this might be an original.  A note from Evelyn Mahrt also attached to the front reads, "I think this might be a book writer's illustration/author?  (Don't Know) - Framed at Rutledge Gallery in Dayton."
  • "Triptich" 3rd State, print #28 of 60 by Brian Halsey.  This is a serigraph or silk screen print.  The print is 18 3/4" wide X 24" high.  It is matted and framed in a gold metal frame that is 24 1/4" wide" 30 1/4" high.  The work is a mathematical study of color shading (from very dark green to orange) and lines in three groupings.  Attached to the painting is the following note from Evelyn Mahrt: "Brian Halsey, born Kendallville, Ind. in 1942.  Height of career in 1970's - serigraphs & acrylic.  He studied Humanities, Church History and Creative Arts at many universities including the Chicago Art Department.  Visualize an ideal was his driving principle.  Interested in Cosmic Order through mathematics.  After 1978 he was most well-known for his hard-edged 3-D serigraphs.  His work is in many museums."
  • Cartoon illustration of Ed Crampton and Ralph Norton (Jackie Gleason and Art Carney) of the television show, The Honeymooners.  The pen and ink illustration is by Feld and is framed in a black metal frame that is 14" wide X 18" high.  The illustration fills he frame
  • "Miami County Courthouse" a pen and ink painting in color by David L. Smith.  The painting is 13" wide X 8" high and is matted in a gold metal frame that is 18" wide X 13" high.
  • Pen and ink drawing of Bob Dylan by Nancy Donnelly, Piqua, Ohio, dated 1986.  The drawing is 7" wide X 8 1/2" high and is matted and framed in a gray wood frame that is 12" wide X 13 1/2" high.
  • "Poems from the Past" by Evelyn J. Perrée Mahrt, Piqua, Ohio, dated 2016.  The painting is of tall grass and trees on the side of a hill.  The painting appears to be oil on artist's board that has been brushed over with a semi-transparent material such as shellac so that the perpendicular brush strokes are visible.  The painting is classified as "miscellaneous" and is 14" wide X 11" high.  It is matted in a heavy gold and black wood matt and is in a black wood frame that is 20 3/4" wide X 17 3/4" high.
  • Oil on canvas by Jeff Rutledge and is dated 2000.  The painting is unframed and stretched on boards.  The painting is an abstract study in geometric shapes.  At the bottom of the painting is a black triangle.  Above that is a section of varying shades of red painted over black in the form of two connected triangles.  The top one-third of the painting is green with offset rows and rows of 1/4" blue dots which form straight lines and straight diagonals.  The painting is 35" wide X 27" high.
  • Oil on canvas by Jeffrey Rutledge dated May 2006.  The painting is an abstraction of a beach scene - in the lower portion is the land in dark orange with sand mixed in with the paint.  Above this is a lighter orange representing the beach.  Above this is a darker green section representing the water near the beach and above that is a light green section representing the water further out.  The top section is light blue representing the sky.  The painting is unframed and attached in back to artist's stretcher boards.  The painting is 24" wide X 18" high.
  • "Plant Uncolored II" - print 1 of 5 by Michele L. Walters.  This is an intaglio Etching at a stage of completion.  The print is 17 3/4" wide X 23 3/4" high and is printed on heavy white paper that is 22" wide X 30" high.  Michele L Walters was a student of Evelyn Mahrt in the Art Department of Wright State University.
  • "Fruits, Bowls & Veggies" - print 1 of 5 by Kimberly Regden.  This is an intaglio etching at a stage of completion.  The print is 23 3/4" wide X 17 3/4" high and is printed on heavy white paper that is 30" wide X 22" high.  Kimberly Regden was a student of Evelyn Mahrt in the Art Department of Wright State University.
  • "Flowing Still Life" - print 3 of 3 by Julie Stevens.  This is a completed intaglio print.  The print is 17 3/4" wide X 23 3/4" high and is printed on heavy white paper that is 30" wide X 22" high.  Julie Stevens was a student of Evelyn Mahrt in the Art Department of Wright State University in the 1990's.
  • "Still Life" - print 2 of 3 by Simon Ku.  This is an intaglio print of an etching of a table with a cloth cover, a potted plant, several bowls, fruit and a 5 candle candelabra.  The print is in a stage of completion but is not totally finished.  The print is 17 3/4" wide X 23 3/4" high and is printed on heavy white paper that is 22" wide X 30" high.

  • Mixed Media by Jeffrey J. Rutledge.  Oil on canvas with three dimensional objects attached to the painting.  The background of the work is black.  On the black background are 8horizontal lines in different colors, each line is about 2" wide and approximately 40" long.  The top line is purple and has 15 bottle caps attached to it with the sharp edges facing out.  The next line down is light green and has 16 Popsicle sticks attached vertically to it - between the Popsicle sticks are attached 17 pennies.  The third line down is a wavy orange line - above the troughs and below the peaks are gray circles, 1" diameter, and in the middle of each circle is a 1/4" red dot.  The fourth line down is blue and has 14 Labatt’s Blue beer caps facing out and alternating right side up and upside down.  The fifth line is lighter brown and has 11 dog biscuits attached to it.  The sixth line down is darker brown and has 15 wood triangles attached to it, alternating point up and point down.  The seventh line is green with darker green heavy paint brush strokes through it and a series of yellow dots.  The bottom line is dark red with two lines of offset blue dots.  The entire art work is 48" wide X 36" high.  The date on the work is 2006.
  • Abstract oil on canvas by Jeffrey J. Rutledge, dated 2004.  The painting is divided into 5 horizontal sections by color.  The top section is 6 1/4" wide and is purple with 13 dark red right triangles pointing 5" downward from the top in the purple section.  The next section is 14" wide and is outlined in 1 1/2" royal blue.  Inside the royal blue outline is a black base with eight 2 1/2" diagonal orange stripes separated by 2 1/2" between them.  The third section down is light green and is 5 1/2" wide.  The fourth section down is light brown and is 6" wide.  Tying the two sections together is a wavy dark green line that is 1 1/2" wide.  The bottom section is a lighter mustard green that is 4" wide.  Tying the bottom two sections together is a series of 10 bright red circles 3" diameter.  Inside each of the circles is a smaller dark red circle 1" diameter.  The entire painting is 48" wide X 36" high.

Rutledge, dated 1997.  The painting is a study in geometric angles and triangles.  The painting is 48" wide X 36" high.  The prominent feature of the painting that ties the other features together is a large purple "X" (2 1/2" wide) that connects the four corners of the painting.  Outlining the "X" is a 3/4" gold line and a 1/2" burgundy line.  At the top of the "X" is a series of 4 green angles from light green, to greenish brown, to bright green and finally to a blue/green triangle.  At the bottom of the "X" is a green angle, a thin black line and then a shade darker green angle, a mingled blue angle, and thinner purple angle and at the bottom a dark green triangle.  To the left of the "X" is a gray angle outlined on both sides in light blue and then there is a navy blue triangle and inside that is a light brown triangular spiral.  To the right of the "X" is a light brown triangle and inside that is a beige triangle and inside the beige triangle is a darker brown and purple triangular spiral.
  • Cron Kills secretary's desk with four wood turned legs.  The desk is walnut and bright varnished finish.  The top of the desk folds flat to make a table that is 36" wide X 18" front to back,  The table is 35" high..  When the top is open the inside bottom of the desk slides out to make a larger writing surface that is 29 1/2" wide X14 3/4" front to back.  There is a wide drawer below the writing surface 29 5/8" X 15 1/2" X 2 3/8" and pigeon holes and a drawer - 8" wide X 9" front to back X 2 11/16" deep -  in the back of the writing surface.

  • Brass serving tray - 15 3/4” X 11" X 5/8" - with handles on the two short sides.  The handles are 3 1/2" X 2".  There is etching decoration in the bottom of the tray.  The tray was used with "Poems from the Past" in The Mahrt Collection, 323 N. Main St., Piqua.
  • Wooden bowl - 18" diameter X 5" deep - on four wooden legs which are 7" high.  2 1/2" up from the bottom of the legs is a wooden disc - 5 1/2" dia. X 5/8" thick - attached to all four legs.  In the middle of the disc is a 3" beveled hole to hold a brass incense burner with a lid.  In the bowl were many polished rocks in the bottom and 53 small scrolls of poems written in the 1970's by Evelyn Mahrt.  The rocks are now in a plastic zip-lock bag and the scrolls of poems are in 2 plastic zip-lock bags.  The following note was found in the bowl with its contents "Poems from The Past - these 53 poems were composed nearly 20 years ago.  Recently, I rewrote them onto scrolls using paper from the deceased Piqua artist, Estella Yenney, The sticks were picked up during walks on the Piqua Bike path. . . ."
  • White plaster of Paris sculpture of Angel's wings.  The sculpture is 49" high X 28" wide X 16" front to back.  They are on a string to be hung from the wall.
