INTRODUCTION
The American Association of University Women, Piqua, Ohio Collection was accessioned into the Flesh Public Library Archives in January, 1991. (91/3)
The Collection fills three Hollinger boxes and thirty-four file folders. The collection covers the years from 1936 to 1990.
There are no restrictions on the use of this Collection and the literary copyright has been deeded to the public.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The American Association of University Women Collection is divided into seven series.
SERIES I. Minutes and Memberships contains meeting minutes, and lists of members from 1936 to 1975.
SERIES II. Branch Reports contains reports from the Piqua, Ohio branch presidents and treasurers. Also included are lists of the officers and a working calendar for 1972.
SERIES III. Programs and Projects contain yearly program booklets, community projects and moneymaking projects.
SERIES IV. Scrapbooks and Correspondence contains scrapbooks made up of numerous newspaper clippings, pictures, reports on programs, etc.
SERIES V. National Headquarters contains a copy of the Charter and various publications pertaining to the operation of A.A.U.W.
SERIES VI. By-laws and Miscellaneous contains by-laws of the club from 1961 to 1981, letters to branch presidents, the newsletter “Choices for Tomorrow’s Women”, promotional mailings, and position/office descriptions.
HISTORY
On November 12, 1936 thirty-two women met at the Y.W.C.A. and signed their names to the constitution as wanting to establish a Piqua branch of the A.A.U.W. Katherine Weber was elected president, Mary Quirk as secretary, and Marie Leonard as vice-president. Dues were $3.00 yearly.
The first contribution of $5.00 to the National Educational Foundation Program was made in 1937, and has been continued annually.
Money-making projects have been book fairs, card parties, style shows, puppet shows, and postalettes. In 1976 an impressive booklet, “Historic Piqua –an Architectural Survey” was compiled.
Many scholarships have been given to local high school girls over the years and still today. In 1991 the A.A.U.W. is a very active and valuable asset to the city of Piqua, Ohio.
