Piqua Public Library Holiday Display 2020 "The Nutcracker"

Piqua Public Library Holiday Display 2020 "The Nutcracker"

Photograph of three Christmas trees in a group together in the Piqua Public Library lobby. All three trees are decorated with lights and decorations. A large wooden nutcracker stands in front of the middle tree. White text reads "Piqua Public Library Holiday Display 2020 The Nutcracker" and the Piqua Public Library logo is in the bottom right corner.

The holidays are different this year, and we want everyone to enjoy our decorations. If you can't visit the Library right now, you can look at this photo "tour" of our holiday decor.

Photograph of the Piqua Public Square. Photo includes the gazebo, which is decorated with garland, lights and red bows. The Fort Piqua Plaza is in the background.

Our 2020 Holiday theme this year is "The Nutcracker." We'll start outside on McCulloch Square. Doesn't the gazebo look cheerful? It also offers an excellent view of the Fort Piqua Plaza.

Photograph of the Piqua Public Library front window. The window is painted with white and red paint, illustrating three scenes from The Nutcracker. The left window shows the Rat King with his army of rats. The middle window shows Clara dancing and holding a nutcracker. The Nutcracker is written above her. The right window shows The Nutcracker and his nutcracker army.

For several years, the Library has had local artist, Michael Glass, paint our front window. We love the pop of red in his design!

Photograph of a column in the entrance of the Piqua Public Library. The column is decorated to look like a giant toy soldier with a red jacket, gold buttons and a black hat and pants.

As we step into the building, giant nutcrackers greet us.

Two photographs, each of a glass display case in the Piqua Public Library. The first one has a collection of menorahs and dreidels, used in the celebration of Hanukkah. The second one has memorabilia, books, and music from the movie Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

The display cases this year focus on popular Christmas stories. These stories include Charles Dickens, Charlie Brown, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and the Twelve Days of Christmas. Additional Christmas displays feature The Changing Views of Santa and nativity sets from Russia, Ukraine, and Mexico. We appreciate Barb Bollenbacher for allowing us to display her menorahs and dreidels.

Instead of one large main tree, we have three trees this year. Their decorations are from "The Nutcracker." Choosing a theme for the main tree is usually the first decision made when planning for our decor.

Photograph of a statue of the mouse, Despereaux. He is wearing a red cape and a large gold crown. He holds a sewing needle in the air like a sword.

Downstairs in the Children's Department, we spot the Rat King! Oh, wait, it's just our brave mouse, Despereaux, dressed up! The Children's Department has beautiful gold stars hanging from the ceiling. If you would like to be a Library Elf, check out the tree with the red paper ornaments. The Girl Scout's Christmas Tree has been decorated annually at the Library for over 50 years! We appreciate Vivian Grimes letting us display her holiday village.

Photograph of the entrance to the Rollin Art Gallery. There is a sign in the foreground which reads Community Christmas Trees. A sign in the background has a photo of library employee and featured artist, Missy Hines.

In the Rollin Gallery, we see artwork by Library staff member Missy Hines. Her show, "Season's Greetings," features holiday fall and winter cards and postcards. It's the third year for our annual Community Christmas Trees display. Vote for your favorite Community Christmas Tree online.

Photograph of a large elf and lots of garland and lights around the mezzanine of the Piqua Public Library.

We have adorned the second floor of the Library with festive garland and jolly elves. Be sure to stop by the Reading Room and Local History to see their decorations.

A serene photograph of the Fort Piqua Plaza at night. The sky is a deep purple gray color and snow is on the ground and falling. Street lights are lit. There is a tree of lights on the outside of the building, over the front door entrance.

We'll end our tour with some photos of the Fort Piqua Plaza at night. The building sparkles with lights and freshly fallen snow.
